Mayo testing a breast cancer vaccine

Mayo is testing a breast cancer & ovarian cancer vaccine that they reckon has already prevented one woman's breast cancer from developing and supposedly stopping recurrences.

“It’s supposed to stimulate a patient’s own immune response so that the immune cells like t-cells would go in and attack the cancer,”

Something to keep an eye on ....

  • That's annoying, @strongtogether  -  specially after contacting them & still given the run around.  If they'd done (or are doing) testing - you reckon they'd have it 'out there' shouting the results!

Surely they could do a Skype (or similar) review first (after you sending all the relevant documentation thru first) - to see if it was worth you going over for further discussions in person, if you were up to going over?

There are so many people working on getting a vaccine - someone has to crack it sooner or later!  Take care xx

  • This is the Keith knutson research. I find it really frustrating because if you read his comments he says it clearly in plain English that they have a vaccine that works for tnbc, but then he switches tack and talks about a more general across the board vaccine.
Tnbc is where the need is greatest. So is this vaccine in trials? Not that I can find anywhere. When there is currently no treatment available post chemotherapy, surgery and rads, you would think that theres no reason not to get on it, as long as its proven safe. I tried emailing him directly and he put me onto an admin person who said that we would have to go to Minnesota for an initial review, and that once the review was done we would be able to apply to be included in trials- but they were not able to say whether they even have a trial planned.
    I found it frustrating!
  • It was a shock to her!  Didn't know there was anything there just they decided to do an additional test for this general check-up and there it was - 8 nodes removed and 3 affected - back on the chemo merry-go-round again for her!
  • That's a bugger about the other lady, @iserbrown - Yep, we just need to remain vigilant to any changes in our bodies, and be proactive in getting checked out!!

  • Interesting!  On my day of diagnosis, Breastscreen recall, oodles in the room and two of us from this area were diagnosed.  It's coming up 5 years and the other lady has just had a recurrence, picked up at her general check-up!  Go figure!  There's no respite is there, the constant umbrella hangs over us and we put our heads out occasionally to enjoy the day but the nagging feeling is there and boom it catches one of us!
