I confess I had practically no pain at all - nurses were offering morphine and painkillers and only stopped when they discovered I had been squirrelling them away. I am no stoic, I just wasn't very sore. I found drains a bit of a trial as I kept tripping over them, but my dressing gown pockets proved perfect for stowing them! Horrible coffee so good advice from Zoffiel, but at the Epworth the food was good (dinner at 5pm less so!!). My only time in hospital before was for a caesarian so I too knew very little. Take things to while away the time ( I had a massive book), walk as soon as you can and exercise your arm as soon as you can and under advice - I had excellent mobility almost straight away, which is what you want. Best wishes.
