Mammogram/Ultrasound/MRI or all of the above

Thank you everyone.  I'm determined now to have an ultrasound but not looking forward to trying to persuade my surgeon to let me have one. I think he might have me pigeonholed as a worrier and try to talk me out of it. Still he might surprise me.

My 2 yearly mammogram detected my IDC in July 2011. Even with ultrasound precision I still could not feel the lump (14mm) just under the skin. I had skin puckering but I hadn't noticed that at all.

I intend to have both mammogram and ultrasound each year from now on.

I am now 6 weeks post radiation treatment. The skin looks a fairly good colour, wounds healed up well. With a full axillary clearance the fluid isn't draining and I have 'congestion' in the breast. I need to make sure it doesn't turn in to lymphodema. I have to massage my breast twice a day - weird! :)

Hi,  I was diagnosed just over 3 years ago.  I could see the lump at the top of my left breast but the mammo didn't show it.  The ultrasound did.  I have a yearly check with both.  I would never trust a mammo only.

It is interesting to read that most of the women commenting on this page have not had good luck with mammograms as a method of BC detection. I have bigger breasts and because of this very fact, my BC was undetectable by feel, even the surgeon could not feel it, 2.5 cm lump, after it had been detected by my 2 yearly mammogram. Because I had no family history of BC, I had no idea that I had it, so 2 yearly checks were all I did. But I am glad you are all saying it as it is, because I am about to make the appt for the 1 yr mammo, and think I might ask for the ultrasound too.

I understand your misgivings about Mammogram as I found my lump 4.9cms! about 4 months after an all clear one! Last year I had a mammogam and ultrasound of my remaining breast and already have the form from my surgeon for this year. I also had lumpy breasts but seems to have become softer since chemo and tamoxifen when the girl did the ultrasond she commented on the change in my breasts it freaked me to start but realised she was comparing it to my previous ultrasound when I had BC diagnosed.

Definitely have ulttrasound it is very accurate on breasts and less radiation than MRI. Good luck

I always have a mammo and ultrasound.  I too agree with the mammo not being so reliable. My first bc was picked up by "moi" and the second on an ultrasound.  I like to have a full body scan at least yearly.  It is 5 years since the first diagnosis and 1 year since the 2nd.  I hate having both tests as my breasts are still very tender.  If you want a test carried out - then ASK for it.  It is your body and health.  I am much more "upfront" these days and we all should be.
