  • Hi Robsue,

This is Annie from BCNA's Policy Team.

Unfortunately once you are diagnosed with breast cancer, you no longer receive free mammograms. Following a breast cancer diagnosis, you will need to have a special type of mammogram called a 'diagnostic mammogram'. You will need a referral from your doctor for a diagnostic mammogram.

In most states and territories, you can't have your follow-up diagnostic mammograms at a BreastScreen clinic, and so your doctor will refer you to a private or public radiology practice. While there is a Medicare rebate available, many women incur an out-of-pocket cost for their follow-up mammograms. This is an issue  that BCNA is concerned about and you can read more about our work on the issue here.

BreastScreen clinics in some states and territories do allow women to return for their follow-up mammograms, however they all have different rules and eligibility criteria. To ask if you are able to have a diagnostic mammogram in Victoria, you may like to phone BreastScreen on 13 20 50 to ask if you are eligible.

    I hope this helps Robsue.
