Malignant phyllodes

Hi All, I was told in 2008 that I had a fibroadenoma in my left breast as it size went up and down with my period. In Dec 2012 I felt it was bigger but I was due and did not think much of it. Well in the last couple of weeks of Feb this year and into March it grew rapidly what was a small lump grew to what they said was 12cm biopsy came back boarderline. I opted for mastectomy after convincing my surgeon who was reluctant as I am only 28 and we didn't know for sure. Sure enough I made the right call it was malignant. I have seen oncologist and radiation oncologist and they have advised me I don't need further treatment as there was no evidence of it in my surrounding blood vessels, the margin was 8mm and 7mm and the edge of it was very smooth with only very mild pronging I think they called it. So all in all I feel very lucky considering it was a massive 19cm. Has anyone else gone through having a malignant one? I trying to stay positive as I have 17 month old twins but the fear of it coming back terrifies me.

  • Wow! A woman's intuition is a wonderful thing. Good on you for having the courage to stand up for what you thought was right. Wishing you all the best
  • Thanks Rosie It is the unknown that plays on my mind so much. I still trying to understand how they can tell if it is in my blood or not. They just said that because there is no sign of invasion in the surrounding blood vessels that they are confident it hasn't. Well that's what I understood of it but not sure if I'm right now :-(
  • Hi,Just read you're story and thanks for sharing. Mine was borderline, and got a wide excision done and second surgey for a margin.  It's such an unpredicatable tumor, and I'm finding that for me it's just a part of my life now to check, and sometimes double check.  Like you I have a fibroadenoma that often appears during my periods, and I'm worried that will turn out to be PT one day. Anyway... I think there are a few on this forum that has had a malignant PT, and from memory they have had Mastectomy but no further treatment.  Hopefully, they'll read you story and share their experience with you.I know it's hard to keep positive.  But if you need support, you can always come on here and chat. Take Care.Rosie
