Making a roster

Tues 23rd Feb, 2016. This morning I am trying to figure out my roster for the next 3 days. What to bring, where I have to wait, what appointments I need to get to. Why did hubby have to do this stupid cleaning training course this week? Couldn’t he just put his life on hold like me until April when this nightmare of cancer is over? Makes me wonder if my chemo is so unimportant should I just drop it and go back to being just the housewife I once was?

We live half an hour away from all my chemo and appointments and hubby has always taken me. Now he leaves at 8am in the morning which means if I want a lift in to town I have to be up at 6am, walk the dogs, have breakfast, shower and load my bag and be ready to go in by then. Mornings sleep in or naps are out.

Tomorrow is 11am GP Dr appointment followed by a blood test. Luckily, changing to a new GP close to the hospital means I only have to walk a few hundred yards to the general hospital. I must remember my umbrella for the sun.

My sister who lives 1.5km from the hospital (up on a hill) doesn’t start her workday on Wed until 1.30pm so from 8.30 to 11am I can at least hang out at her place and have a free cuppa and she can drop me down to the Dr. I could have lunch at the hospital cafeteria after the blood test and ring sis to drop me back to her place before she goes off to work and wait at her place until hubby is finished his course for the day at 3pm. A whole wasted afternoon waiting for a lift home. It just annoys me as I am finally after a couple of weeks feeling sick, now I still get to sit and do nothing. I suppose my sis place does have a lovely view. I could at least plug in my laptop in and play games on the internet or chat to my friends on face book?

Thursday’s roster isn’t too bad. My lovely neighbours have asked what day would you need a lift in? I said I need to get to Hervey Bay at 2pm for an oncology appointment. Ok then, they said, we’ll make Thursday our shopping day and run you in after lunch and Les can take you home when he gets finished his course at 3pm. Aren’t they just the best neighbours? It means I can take all my pre-chemo pills at home instead of taking them with me to take in town.

Friday I will be dropped off by hubby at 8.30am in Hervey Bay. It’s chemo day again and my appointment isn’t until 11.15am. My sis starts work at 11am so maybe I can hang out at her place from 8.30 to 10.45 and she can drop me off for the day at oncology. I should be finished about 2pm so I will just wait in the waiting room until 3pm when hubby picks me up. That is unless I have another reaction to the chemo drugs and I don’t finish until 3.30pm like last time. I will have to have the presence of mind to ring the nurse buzzer myself if I have a reaction this time with no hubby to grab the nurse like last time. Hubby waiting half an hour for me to finish my appointment instead of the other way around; that’s a nice idea.

Chemo brain means I have to write every thing down including the list of things to take each day. I just have to remember where I have put the list and look it before I leave. Sorry for the long list, and the grizzle. Its stressful enough just having breast cancer treatment without having to figure out how to get to appointments myself.

  • Two days done and dusted and A OK. Just hope chemo tomorrow is a breeze as well. I really don't want any nasty reactions this time and to be safe the oncologist said we will do the 3 lots of pre-med just to be sure. Long day alone but I will get the nurse to plug in my laptop so I can play on the internet and watch a dvd or two. Just need to consult my list in the morning so I remember to put everything in my bag including my lunch time pills.

  • Hi there Brenda,

my husband had to go overseas for work for two weeks slap bang in the middle of my chemo treatment. Like you, I had appointments and times when I was ill and didn't want to be on my own. So many people asked if they can help throughout my treatment, as no doubt you have,  so nows the time to ask. Put out the call! I put a post on fb saying I needed lifts on these days for these times and was anyone available to help me. I had a heap of people come forward to offer. They were more than happy to help as they all felt useless and didn't know what to do to help. I made a roster out of everyone who offered and it meant I was covered. it's a pain having to work it out yourself but if nothing else, it will give you something to do. Ask your kids, neighbours, friends and even acquaintances. Good luck. Karen xox

  • Oh Brenda, normal life seems hard enough on chemo and then it only takes one thing to make it all seem too much. But just think, this is your second last chemo, in 3 & 1/2 weeks you'll be done and just have recovery time. You're doing so well, hang in there. Enjoy the view from your sisters place ??
