Lumpectomey 1 year today

Hi

Its been a while since I posted. Today is one year since my lumpectomy. It was the first time in the 4 weeks since my diagnosis that I thought there was a step forward in my breast cancer treatment - the prior 4 weeks as we all know were horrific with the roller coaster of tests, poking and prodding and the associated stress with waiting for results in that time. But I felt some relief after the lumpectomy, the tumour was gone yay. But there was still another week to wait for the results to see if the margins were clear and that there was no lymph node involvement. So the stress was still there. But fortunately they were clear. I was not aware at that stage that I would have to have chemotherapy. I am glad I did as I feel a little more protected - but as we know it is doable, but chemo is a tough gig. My body is recovering well from the chemo and radiotherapy, back at the gym and doing a 76 minute workout 3-4 times per week. I put on weight with the lack of exercise with chemo and the tamoxifen is making it hard to move that weight. but I am determined - I will plug away at it.

I had my one year scans a few weeks ago, there is nothing new there and I was finally able to relax a bit more. I do have micro calcification on the lumpectomy scar - so I will have another scan in 6 months to ensure its not turning into something bad.

Hope you are all doing well.

  • Hi Marg

Thanks for sharing your encouraging journey. I am at the beginning of my BC journey. Been doing the roller coaster 4 weeks of waiting since diagnosis. Seeing surgeon next week to find full results and treatment plan. A lumpectomy is one possible option for me so very interested in how that has been for you. So happy for you that you have had the 1 year all clear!  It is helpful to prepare myself mentally that the difficult wait tine continues through each phase. Something I am trying hard to be patient with. Feel like I am making small progress with thus. You have helped me with your blog!

    Take care.

  • Hi Marg,

I am so happy for you , it is truly wonderful !

I am 2 years on and waiting on my mammogram and u/s results, and sadly, it doesn't get any easier at that time...I am nervous and anxious while waiting for the oncologist to call me. Also my bone density for my osteoporosis is not getting any better...apparently the Arimidex is not helping , but I must be on it , regarless. Still, I am keeping busy and very fit while gardening and walking and I love it.

    lots of hugs

  • Hi there Marg, congrats on reaching this fantastic milestone!! It's such a relief isn't it each time you get yet another one of these stages out of the way? Well done on doing what you can to help your body recover and to regain your health - that is at least one thing we can have some control over! Best wishes, Jane xx

  • Glad to hear you are doing so well. I've just had my second lumpectomy re-excision and finally have clear margins! So happy. I've an appointment to see a radiation oncologist as I had comedo narcosis present (DCIS nuclear grade intermediate). No one has mentioned chemo or hormone therapy so hopefully chemo is not necessary. Glad to hear you are working out. I work out 5 times a week (Venus circuits). Hope to keep my workouts up throughout radiation if I can. It's so good to hear that you are doing so well. Keep up your diet and fitness regime as it is definitely beneficial to health. Good luck for the future.
  • Good on you! Wow it is amazing what a year can make. I'm 10 months into 14 months of treatment and can't believe that I'm nearly at the other side. Like you I found chemo tough going but got through it. For all the newbies out there that are wondering how they are going to get through this, it is doable. Not pleasant but doable. I wish you continued good health and happiness Marg.
