Hi girls, I went into surgery aiming for a DIEP and despite being reassured by the surgeons, it turned TRAM after all. I believe this often happens.
The difference between TRAM and DIEP from my point of view is the difference between ongoing weirdness, shape, hard mesh area, bloating with TRAM against no mesh and normal soft belly with DIEP. Janey has a both one on each side so could describe the difference.
Then there is scars. Everyone's seem different, but they are there.
The notion of a tummy tuck that I often hear it referred to is not accurate. A tummy tuch would be flat with normal soft tummy with full sensation. This is not true for tram or DIEP.
So, where I am going is, if your choice is between a less invasive recon and a DIEP (which may well be a tram in the end) then I would definitely go with less invasive. Even 18 months of procedures is preferable to a lifetime of hard and insensitive tummy area. Give me my mummy tummy back any day.
I am not complaining, just didn't really have a true idea of what to expect despite feeling really well researched. And now it's done there is no going back.
I am so so pleased there may be new things offered on the horizon. You girls might just get lucky.
