Life with a prosthesis

Normally don't give much thought to my prosthesis once I am dressed for the day. We have gone away for a short break in our caravan and this morning I went to get dressed in the little bathroom of our van. Grabbed my bra out of the cupboard to put on (had left the prosthesis sitting in it overnight) only to discover the side with the prosthesis was all wet! OMG I thought, it's leaking! Thoughts of having to stuff my bra with socks for the rest of the weekend raced through my head! As did all the warnings of the lady when I bought my prosthesis about being very careful of sharp objects. Well it turns out a liitle pipe running through the rear of the cupboard has sprung a leak, the prosthesis is fine! But I was still a bit nervous of it and a little while later looked down and thought my top looked damp on that side. Started feeling and pressing all around but it was fine. But then I realized that I had done all the feeling and pressing in full view of the man sitting outside his caravan a little distance away! :) Deanne x

  • Yes, I have an aqua wave prosthesis as well as my more expensive one. I have used it for swimming and also prefer it for exercise as there is that space between the skin and it. That would have been my back up! Maybe this was a timely warning to take more care of both of them as I have been getting more and more casual about them! :)
  • I have recently purchased 'aqua wave' prothesis for my swimmers, although haven't used them in my swimmers yet. I too went off in my van this weekend. I now take my 'aqua waves' when I go camping etc as I find them more durable and don't require as much care and attention as my others.

Still haven't decided if I will wear them bushwalking - I am a bit wary of the wait-a-while catching onto them. It doesn't seem to be a bushwalk if I don't at least get caught of an least one wait-a-while.

  • What a relief! I can just imagine the horror until you had found the source of the leak, but I bet the bloke across the way would have had no idea what you were up to.
