Leukaemia after breast cancer

Hi ladies,

I has breast cancer in 2012 for which I underwent chemotherapy and radiation, have been all clear ever since however 2 months ago was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia.  Drs have said it is probably due to the chemotherapy treatment in relation to the breast cancer.   Has anyone else experienced this or were you told this could be a possibility following treatment?

  • Hi Joeby,

I so sorry that you are now dealing with this new diagnosis. I was informed of the risks of both chemo and radiotherapy prior to commencing treatment. At the time, I felt that I had no choice but to take the risk. I wish you all the best with your treatment. Take care. Karen xox

  • So sorry you have yet another obstacle to deal with ??

I was informed about potential to develop leukemia at a later date as well as potential for heart damage pre my chemo but then not like we have much choice than to have the Chemo and hope for the best...

I hope they are looking after you and that it all goes well.

    Hugs

    Jel.

  • That's no good Joeby. Yes I was informed it can be a risk with breast cancer treatment but the incidence is rare and what other choices to we have when fighting breast cancer? It sounds like the treatment for your leukaemia is more chemo. Hoping you breeze through it easier than with the breast cancer chemo and have a long remission with it.

  • I developed PRV a rare blood cancer 1 in 200,000 I'm now on daily oral chemo aspirin and venesection every 8 weeks. My bc was diagnosed in 2012 and I was diagnosed with PRV in 2015

  • The risks of leukemia with chemo were explained in detail to me and one that I hope don't  experience. I am so sorry you have to go through this also and wish you well with your treatment. Kath x

  • Hi Joeby

So sorry to hear of your latest diagnosis.  When having chemo I was told that leukaemia can be a side effect - 1 in 1000 - I remember saying that is really a lot of people, and what do you do then??  Have chemo to combat the chemo related side effect??  It is great the they have all these drugs to keep us alive, but they still have a long way to go.

But I thought the danger went after a couple of years, its so long after your treatment.  Good luck with your treatment,

    Pam
