Latest results - decisions to make
Hi all
I'm 48, with 3 children aged 19-26. My breast cancer was discovered during a routine pap smear and breast check that I have every 2 years. I'd never had a mammogram and the Dr suggested I have one as my breast felt grainy. She didn't specify it was a lump, but thought the mammogram would be good to have as a base to detect any abnormalities in the future. The core biopsy determined it was invasive cancer.
After having a lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy on 5 May, I received pathology results that there was a further 37mm of DCIS. My lymph nodes came back clear. Second surgery was last week and I received the results yesterday that it wasn't clear and now require a mastectomy. The surgeon wants to do the mastectomy after chemo. My concern is I had an MRI done a week before the second surgery to make sure there was nothing in the left breast and no more than what was discovered in the right breast (of DCIS). I was questioning where I should have the second surgery or just have a mastectomy. The surgeon was confident that she could get it all. At the appointment yesterday the Dr mentioned that as the MRI was completed after the first surgery it could have compromised the result and therefore further DCIS wasn't detected.
Should an MRI be completed prior to surgery? Did anyone else have an MRI and it was wrong?
I now have about 3 months to decide whether I just remove the right breast or if I should remove both to avoid anxiety in the future. I know I don't want to go through this again in 5 or 10 years. I'm concerned if the extra DCIS wasn't picked up in the MRI that the results could be wrong on the left breast too. I could have the double mastectomy and breast reconstruction completed at the same time.
I'm also triple positive, so as HER2 positive will require Herceptin intravenously for a year. The chemo will force me into menopause, fortunately I wasn't planning on having any more children.
Has anyone else had a similar experience to me? Did you get a double mastectomy and what type of reconstruction did you do - implant or tissue?
I'm meeting the medical oncologist at 3.30pm today to found out the chemo and Herceptin treatment plan. I just want to get it all started.
Many thanks
Tracey xo
