I was wondering if anyone had the blus on for all of their treatments and got relly fried like me. Because my cancer involved my skin my trestment was pretty brutal. All my skin came off down to bare flesh and I had to use treatments for burn victims. What I want to know is there any ine like me out there and is it posssible that I could ever have some sort of reconstruction?

  • Hi Klad,

I have read a number of accounts of radiotherapy burn on this network - you may want to connect with the women who have posted here - http://www.bcna.org.au/user/4911/blog/12030 and here - http://www.bcna.org.au/user/5009/blog/11445

Sorry to hear you had such a dreadful reaction to radiotherapy. As a Policy Officer at BCNA, I can tell you that BCNA has been investigating this issue after hearing from a number of women that experienced severe burns.

We recently completed a survey where we asked women about their personal experiences with burns. The results will be summarised in an article which will be published in the winter edition of The Beacon - you may like to keep an eye out for this.

As for the possibility of reconstruction, have you discussed this with your oncologist? They may refer you to a surgeon who can chat to you about whether reconstruction is possible.

    Cheers, Annie

  • Kerrie,

Do you mean that you had bad skin breakdown after your radiation? I had terrible skin after my radiation treatment, and I had to treat it like burns too.

I personally have not had a reconstruction and am not sure if I ever will. So I can't help out there. A lot of the other women might be able to advise of this.

    Take care, Deb

  • Hi klad and welcome.  I've featured your post so that if anyone else has had a similar experience, hopefully they'll see it.

The other thing you can do is to use the main site search (see above the main navigation where it says 'start your search here') and type in some different key words to see if anyone else has been posting about the same subjects.  When the search results come back, you can see on the right side which are blog posts.  Try out some different word combinations and see how you go.

Hope that helps, just shout if you need a hand with anything. :)
