Kadcyla is working for me but....

I started Kadcyla on October 2014. My breast cancer has metastasize to my liver. The tumours have shrunk more than half their size now. They have to skip two sessions because of severe fatigue and the latest is low platelet count. With this I get bad nose bleeds and gum bleed and bad headaches.

anyone on Kadcyla that are experiencing the same side effects?

  • There was no advice about the platelets, as they have to get really low before you might need a transfusion.  So good your scans were normal. 10 days till mine, I tend to get a bit cranky in the lead up

  • Hi Karen

When you had low platelets did they advised you what to do to put up the platelet count?

I had the CT scan ( brain, chest & abdomen)two weeks ago and normal result. The tumours on my liver had been unchanged. They have the same size compared to the scan last February 2015.

  • Hi Lisa

I have been on Kadcyla for 14 months and my tumor was gone after 3 treatments.  I am on a maintenance dose now and due for my 6 months scan in 3 weeks.  I have had the nose bleeds but found out I was having too much fresh food with antioxidants, which was the main cause (blueberries etc) I have also had 2 'complicated' UTI's which can be a side effect and you must not have cranberry juice which is common for UTI's. I had 9 weeks without treatment due to liver problems in the middle of last year. My Dr prescribed a daily Hiprex daily for ther UTI, if you get it on prescription it is a lot cheaper,  Fatigue is annoying, I have treatment on a Tuesday and usually sleep all afternoon by Saturday.  Most days I get home from work about 3 and sleep in the chair for 1/2 an hour.  Have missed a couple this year to low platelets but these seem to fluctuate and have improved now I am on a lower dose.  Hang in there, we are truly blessed to have this drug.

Let me know if you have any more questions

  • Lisa,

I had Kadcyla as part of a clinical trial in 2012, but it didn't work for me. However it has been great for many women. The U.S site Her2support.org has many useful postings about side-effects, as it has been in common use there for ages.

    Best wishes.... Pam
