Just diagnosed

Hi there, My name is Danielle. I was diagnosed last week after my GP found a lump on a routine breast exam. I'm off to surgery today. I am 39 years old have 3 beautiful girls and a wonderful husband. I am a cancer nurse and have treated many ladies ( and the odd man) with breast cancer over the years. Knowing people in the field has been a blessing as I have been able to negotiate the medical minefield fairly well. It is however very strange to walk into a clinic where you have worked and treated patients to be worked up for treatment yourself! Thank god for lorazepam I think it's the only thing that has kept me sane this past couple of days!

    I too am 39 years old and was diagnosed with mixed ductal and lobular cancer in late March this year.

    I had a lumpectomy and 9 lymph nodes removed.  I've just had my third treatment of chemo and am slowly making my way through.

    I note that you're a cancer nurse and am wondering how you are going being on the patient side of the spectrum?  I'm sure your medical knowledge of the disease has helped in making sense of your diagnosis.

    Hi Danielle... it feels strange to say welcome to a forum for Breast Cancer women/men... but welcome. This is a great place to post ideas.. concerns.. problems... ask questions... make contacts... or just write down your feelings.. especially during those first few weeks after your diagnosis. I'm sure you will find (as I did) the support from anonymous people comforting and strangely reasurring.

    I hope your surgery went well and that you are on your way to recovery. Remember to take some time for yourself and let your husband and daughters pamper you for a while.

    Hi Danielle, I just read your post and I feel your pain. Upon diagnosis, my first thoughts were for my kids and family also. Be assured that your beautiful spirit and caring nature will bring them through this journey with you safely. I found that being open and telling family and friends about how you are feeling helps everyone. Letting people into your life and not closing them out has given me an inordinate amount of inner peace. My circle of supporters has increased, despite my husband deciding to leave. I am sure your man has much greater internal fortitude and it sounds as if your relationship is strong. Do take time out for yourself though. Rest up when you need it and be kind to yourself.     Thinking of you, and wishing you all the best for your surgery today. The world changes on its axis when you get the diagnosis doesn't it - just take one day at a time.  Having wonderful family support is such a huge plus.  On Mother's Day, a knock at my door was 3 sons from interstate, and one from overseas - what a gift!  And my husband actually kept the secret!
