JaneW, Arimidex pros and cons please

Would like some comments on pros and cons for Arimidex.

Having problems with the medication.

Joints ache - anxiety - emotional (tearing up a lot) stressy - nausea (not so bad can cope with it) insomnia - tired - foggy - short term memory shot to pieces.

Has been suggested to try Femara but have done a quick check and that looks just as interesting!

Kind regards

Jane

  • Hi Chris

Thank you, Will be very interested in how you go as my Dr said that she has had clients who have changed to Femara with good results.  At the moment Arimidex is certainly kicking in today with stronger achy joints especially in hands wrist, neck and base of spine. Hot flushes are not a problem - very mild. Absent mindedness is a problem (I have a habit of chucking used T towels at the kitchen door to be taken out to laundry unfortunately I threw a tomato instead - at least I did't put the t towel on my sandwich!) driving towards a big red gravel truck not so good.

  • Sometimes changing from one drug to another can make a difference. I have heard of someone who changed from Arimadex to Femara, or the other way round, and all her nasty side effects vanished. I started on Femara 10 days ago, and am waiting for the side effects to kick in. So far so good, but I do think the hot flushes have changed in their dynamics. Somehow they seem different to how they were on tamoxifen. The side effects of these aromatase inhibitors are not much fun. This is the first time I have been able to post a blog with my ipad. The long running problem must have been finally sorted out. Chris xx
  • Just had to reply to your blog.  I should be packing to go away for the weekend.  I have stopped taking Arimidex on my oncologist's advice (he is in Brisbane and I'm in Rockhampton) two weeks ago.  I am post chemo 12 weeks and I have great pain in my joints,, muscles and seems like everywhere.  I have had tests done to see if it is arthritis, poly myalgia (my sister has this) but still am the same with negative results on these.  I take pandaol osteo three times a day but not much relief.  I am off to see the Medical Oncologist next week when he is in town.  I sleep well at night but during the day - okay at most walking if I limit the times BUT the bending and getting up and down.  What a killer.  I feel like my body is soooooo old and I'm only 55 and was very active prior to chemo.  I too had Taxetore which seems to be the culprit.  I hope to have more information after Thursday's appointment.  Will let you know.  I too don't want to take Femara.  I was previously on Tamoxifen for 4 years with not too many side effects (some break through bleeding which needed to have regular d&c investigation) but otherwise okay.  I was put on Arimidex when I was re-diagnosed in December 2010 prior to radiation and chemo.  I stopped the Arimidex prior to chemo.  From diagnosis to chemo I had no problems with joints, muscles etc.  So it could be the chemo -   will know more later.  Please add me as a contact so I can let you know.
