It's white

sometimes the trivial things in your life worry you the most. I completed 16 doses of paclataxel on 3rd December. I know I am impatient but I thought I would feel much better and my hair would be regrowing faster. 5 weeks and a soft white down is just appearing. Because it is white, which I don't mind, it appears as though there is nothing there. Am I expecting too much too soon? I know that everyone is different but thought someone may have experienced something similar.

i started on faslodex 3 weeks ago and was wondering if it may have added to my fatigue and general feeling un well?

i hope everyone had a great Christmas and a lovely New Year. Wishing all of you the best.??

  • Hi Karel, it took around 3 months after the last chemo treatment before I ditched my wig, but it was still very, very short at that stage. Its been 9 months now and I'm only just contemplating my first haircut! It grew back very curly (almost a fro).. I always wanted curly hair and have been getting plenty of compliments on my new hair do. As for fatigue its been 7 months now since the last of my radiotherapy and I still get tired. I work full time so I suppose that doesn't help, but there are days I almost nod off at my desk I'm so tired. I guess it all takes time and we just need to be patient. I'm not on any ongoing medications as I was triple negative. Best wishes Anne

  • Thanks for the reply,

Chemo is such a strong treatment and I have to realise it will take a long time for my body to recover. I have started walking daily again so hopefully will start to strengthen and hopefully be more optimistic.

    Cheers, Karel

  • Hi Annamaree,

thanks for the reply. It does get hot and I walk around my house hatless. With my large reading glasses my grandson thinks I look like a minion, except I'm not yellow. I will try to be more patient, as everyone is different.

    cheers,

    Karel

  • Thanks Lyn,

my hair as slow to grow so I must be patient. I have started back on daily walks so I hope that helps to make me stronger.

    keep well, Karel

  • Hi Karel,

it took me a good 6 months to grow some decent hair after finishing chemo. Now I have beautiful curly hair. It is thicker than before and darker. I love it.

I finished chemo in July 2014, radiotherapy in December 2014 and herceptin in July 2015. I am still struggling with fatigue although I am managing to work 3 days a week.  I was warned that it would take a good 12 months after finishing treatment before I would begin to feel more like my old self. Hang in there. It will all come in time. Karen xox

  • Hi

Can't help much about the fatigue I am afraid, but don't worry too much about your hair. Mine came in like peach fuzz - barely visible, thin and chalk white. I was still having chemo so hadn't expected it and was cheered (as I was by a row of diminutive eyelashes about the same time) but also a bit alarmed. But it gradually thickened.

Be prepared for some changes though - most people can put up with them relatively easily because we are just happy to have hair, but it can take a time for the damage to sort itself out. You will probably get a full head of hair fairly quickly, but it may be a different colour or texture. It's frequently very curly. After a  lifetime of dead straight hair, I got what could only be described as a  thick head of frizz!  But it alters. Mine is now mainly back to my normal texture, but it's much less grey (which is good!) and is still changing slightly (back 2+ years). I look at it as a cheap way to vary my hairstyle!

Good luck, hope the fatigue proves temporary.

  • Hi Karel

I finished chemo 3 months ago and radio 1 month ago.  All I have is a pure white fuzz about 2 cm sides and back and only 1/2 on the very front.  I look like a little old man those thining on top.  I agree that being white looks like there is virtually nothing there.

Have been wearing hats walking etc but since back from a very hot Qld holiday Ive given up indoors and am now revealing all.  A few sympathy stares but I dont care anymore.  Lovely and soft though.

Cant help with your drugs and symptoms however as mine were different.

    Best of luck

    Annmaree

  • Hi Karel. I finished chemo 6/10/15. I didn't get much fuzz until late November or early December. My hair is still less than 1cm long, but it always did grow slowly.

As far as the fatigue goes, I'm not sure. I've had surgery and am 2/3 of my way through radiotherapy. However, I know I didn't start losing nails until 6-7 weeks after I finished chemo, so it is still affecting us for a long time after the last dose.

Hope you're travelling well, otherwise, Lyn
