It's not over yet... genetics results

Well my last chemo may be over but the next chapter is just beginning. I just got the results of my genetics test and yes, I have the BRCA2 gene.

So next step is another meeting with the surgeon and I guess a double mastectomy and goodbye ovaries.

I would like to hear from anyone else who discovered they also have the gene and what decisions you made. I am waiting to hear back from the surgeon now in regards to my options.

Damn, and I was supposed to return to work in July. ;-/

    No, not a complete shock. With a strong family history I was expecting it so I was prepared for the news. Just wish they did the test earlier. Oh well.

    I am still waiting on my results but opted on a bilateral mastectomy because of the sucky family history regardless. I am happy with the decision and the reconstruction. ..although not complete yet as still having treatment. My wait is whether my ovaries should still be removed even though through menopause. It is a difficult decision and one made with help of the genetic teams advise and your own gut feeling. Thoughts are with you. Take your time. ..you don't  beed to decide overnight. Kath x

    Hi! How frustrating to find this out when you had just finished and thinking about returning to work (I'm a teacher also). I'm a few months behind you, only half way through my chemo but found out near the beginning of treatment that I have the BRCA 1 gene. A massive shock as no history of breast cancer in my family. I have had chemo before surgery so am planning a double mastectomy with reconstruction once finished.  Let me know if you need any advice xx

    Oh! No I don't have that gene however I just wanted to come on here and wish all the best and hope that it is an easy journey. Take care!
