Its Done!
Well, Ive been home for 4 hours now and starting to feel a tiny bit tender for the first time!
Yesterday my check -n to the hospital was 8am and I had the surgery around 3:30pm. Some how I managed to switch off most of my brain to 'keep it together' - the logic I was running on was if I started crying in the morning I would be knackered before I even went in for the op!
My husband was looking more nervous than me (at least I THINK he looked more nervous lol) and was mostly just sitting around waiting while I had the solution for the lymph node mapping then the hook wires put in so getting taken to different parts of the hospital broke the day up for me meaning time didnt drag too much.
I wasnt sure how they found the lymph nodes so was surprised at how quickly it worked for me. I had been told that everyone is different from 5-10mins to a few hours!! Five injections went in around my nipple which I then had to massage to help the fluid get moving, then into the machine for 3 angles - 4mins worth of photos at each angle. Just mentioning this for other ladies who might not have come across how this is done.
The hook wires were done with ultrasound assistance and was 100x better than my experance with the core biopsys so was very happy with that!
Every single nurse and doctor I saw were so nice, thoughtful and professional. I was at St Vincents (East Melbourne) and my surgeon was Dr Caroline Baker.
Having never had an operation before I distacted myself looking around at the different medical gadgets and stuff on the walls. Was surprised that there is a que of people lined up in beds in a room all preped to go!
Have been told my surgery went well and since my sentinal nodes were clear they ony took three. I am all bandged up so havent seen my scar/stitches yet but have more boob left than what I was expecting so feeling extremly happy at the moment!
I will get the results on the margins this Monday and find out if I am in for radiotherapy or chemo. For now I am simply celibrating the lymph node results! One step at a time! :)
