Indole 3 carbinol

I'm wondering whether there are any women out there who are taking indole 3 carbinol instead of tamoxifen? If there are, have you noticed any side effects from I3C and what has your oncologist's attitude been towards it? Is there anyone taking I3C with tamoxifen? I've read online, at a cancer research site, that they can work "co-operatively".

I'm not taking either just yet but I'm due to start tamoxifen soon and I'm really worried about the side effects. I will give it go - maybe I'll be lucky and not get the side effects.

However, from what I've read I3C - which is a substance derived from cruciferous vegies like broccoli, cauliflower and kale - is showing a lot of promise in preventing eostrogen postive breast cancers. It sounds like a great natural alternative if tamoxifen turns out to be really difficult to tolerate. Or even if tamoxifen is tolerable, then something I could take as well to further minimise the chances of a recurrence.

I will raise the issue with my oncologist when I see her next week but would really appreciate any opinions or information from women who might be using it.

  • Hi Janet

I've never heard of this but I'm interested.  Currently I've been on tamoxifen and I don't like it at all - it has increased my hot flushes enormously. I don't know whether it was to do with the type of cancer I had (mucinous Breast Cancer - very rare) but I've never been offered anything different.  I might look this up and see what I think and maybe discuss it with my oncologist as an alternative....Thanks for bringing this up.
