I'm struggling and trying to find the right combination and strength

5 days after treatment and I'm struggling. I'm taking the Ondansetron & maxolon cocktail which is keeping the vomit down but the feeling of nausea hasn't gone and all I feel like doing is eating & sleeping.  If I could get the nausea under control I think I would feel better but I'm not sure how quickly Onda takes to set in properly. I know I need to be kind to myself but today is hard to not get frustrated.

  • I had to increase my dexamesthasone to 4 days. Change to stemitil strictly 8 hourly and have ondastron wafers half  hour before I ate a main meal. It was hard going. But it was only 4 cycles and  then onto something different.

Rest up. You will start feeling better by day 5, still washed out but better.
  • I’m able to ring the cancer clinic and speak to a cancer nurse if needed.
Give them a call, Surely it’s  the same in every state.
  • Maxalon did nothing for me but Ativan for nausea combined with Somac or Nexium for reflux were lifesavers.
  • @LisaJHM,

Just ring the hospital or clinic and they will put you through to one of the cancer care nurses.
  • thanks for the advice and positive thoughts. I'm giving it one more day on the combo and then will get in contact with the oncologist although its through the public systems so don't think I can ring her rooms. I'm struggling mentally with the thought that this is how it is going to be for the next 20 weeks and will be working heavily on attempting the positive thoughts to help support an easier second dose. :)
  • Hi @LisaJHM I found the first round of chemo horrendous and didn’t know if I could cope for any more. However, round two was much easier and I learned what helped with what. Getting the drug cocktail right can be a bit difficult because we all react so differently to the drugs. Hang in there. Lots of hugs.
  • Hi Lisa.  Did they give you the ondanz tablets or wafers.  I found the wafers kicked in a lot quicker.

Some people don't tolerate Maxalon very well and it can make you nauseas and dizzy. I couldn't use it as it made things worse.   Maybe flick that one and just try the ondansetron on its own. Check with your GP or ring the oncology clinic.

  • Hang in there Lisa.  I don't have any advice but just wanted to send some good wishes.  xx
  • Sorry to hear this, @LisaJHM.   Are you able to contact your Onc or GP and discuss your side effects?  Sometimes what works for some doesn't work for others.  It is important that they know about how ill it is making you

Take care, and I hope you can get on top of this asap  xxxx    Can you try taking your tabs at a different time of day?  At night instead of morning or the opposite?

Thinking of you & big hugs xxx
