Ignorance

Hi all, I went to a breast cancer fundraiser on Saturday. They had a great guest speaker a surgeon who came from Taralgon he was very interesting. After not a single person asked questions, finally some ladies did and I was so shocked at all the info and stuff out there that ladies did not know about the importance of checking, most comments came from the 20- 30 year olds and the most common remark was how do you check yourself? So it shows how much work still needs to be done to educate everyone. I became the instant celebrity on my table, I was hugged had my back rubbed and laughed to myself. Girls if they only knew what we go through! Love to you all, Adean

    Whilst educating young women to self exam I also believe that doctors should be encouraging a holistic approach to check ups. As a young woman, when I first approached my doctor over 16 yrs ago for contraception I was also encouraged to have pap smears every 2 years. Due to my first breast scare in my early 20's I also started having my GP do a breast exam each time I had a smear done. I have tried to encourage my friends to request the same however a few have said their doctors are not favourable to this. If there was a way to encourage doctors to check everything in the one consult for younger women it may help with educating these younger women to self check as well.

    Hi Adean I guess we are all more aware due to what we have all come through. I must admit even when I had the lump I could not feel it as it was so deep in the breast. That was the scary thing. The GP's should. E making a point of showing all women how to self examine. Maybe we should be pushing for that! BCNA do a great job but it seems the message is still it getting through eh? Marion Xx

    I can imagine you being the celebrity, just like a rock star.

    On a serious note, its very scary that in this day and age young women are ignorant on this matter. I suppose its our job to spread the message, to put it out there that self examination is important, that breast screening is a must.

    Hi Adean, that is surprising isn't it? Maybe the Breast Cancer Foundation should run an education program. Maybe their GP's are not informing them. Who knows?
