Hi All,
In the end after seeing multiple plastic surgeons and being offered varying and conflicting information I chose to do a stage 1 double mastecomy with tissue expanders with additional stage 2 surgery to come that will replace the temporary tissue expanders with permanent implants. It was a risky discussion due to the fact that I had radiotherapy and there was always concern that my skin may not handle the surgery and possibly die. I did have a small complication with a section of skin dieing however that was easily removed and all is now good.
My breast surgeon was Prof Michael Hughes out of the SAN clininc and plastic surgeon was Prof David Pennington (office in Sydney) and surgery was performed at Macquarie Uni Private Hospital.
Dr Pennington also gave me more of a 25-50% chance of failure vs 75% using new kinds of implants and tecniques and I decided it was worth the risk.
I was initially concidering DIEP flap but unfortunately did not have enough tissue on my stomach to build 2 breasts. Dr Pennington was the only surgeon to give an alternative which was to use tissue from my hips (love handles) but in the end I chose the implant route for the hip option was very invasive.
Dr Pennington is the best micro/plastic surgeon that I could recommend.
Also Macquarie Uni hospital was fantastic, only a year or so old, very hi tech, great staff, great food, great rooms.
