I HATE BLOOD TESTS
OK. I NEED TO VENT.
Does anyone else dread the blood tests ? My veins are shot post chemo and it hurts :(
I always seem to get the nurse at the path place who is hopeless and has difficulty getting blood from me and leaves a big bruise.
I always try to quietly ask for someone experienced because I have had previous traumatic experiences with giving blood, but today the hopeless nurse confronted me about it.
I calmly tried to explain my history to her, but she just didn’t get it. Why should I have to explain myself?
I swear, she must work there 24/7 and is always free when I get there!!!!!!

- It’s not so much the chemo that harms the veins, it’s the constant puncturing, often on the ‘good veins’, it builds up small amounts of scar tissue - not huge but then again neither are the veins! Small needles help, as does making sure you are really well hydrated before the stabber has a go. I was having three tests a week at one point, on one arm, so yes it can get difficult. My hand veins are larger so I didn’t mind going there although it invariably bruised. Now I only have tests once in a while, so not much difficulty but the scar tissue is still there.

@Sister - what a bugger. I wonder if they've done major studies on how chemo does permanent damage to blood vessels - seems an awful lot have problems post chemo. :( Take care xxx - I had a port and that was supposed to save my veins. I had to have a blood test a few weeks ago and the woman could only get a miniscule amount so I had to go to a bigger clinic. First person tried twice, couldn't get anything. Second one got it on the second go. This was with plenty of fluid and heat packs. And from the back of my hand. I was so anxious by then.
- @Caz1 I had a port for chemo and now this has been removed looks like it's caused me other problems. How are your feet going.

- Oh Tracey, so sorry , I hope you are ok. I was in your position exactly when I went back into hospital and I remember what would have been just about the worst hour of my life down in medical imaging when they were trying to get blood out of me. Ended up with a picc line which made things easier. #drama
- Hi I can relate. I'm currently in hospital with a hiccup. I've got a canula in right arm for putting into me but it's no longer working for taking blood. They have taken it out of back of my hand and wrist and this hurts. Can't use other arm due to mastectomy.

- Just reading these things are making me shudder in remembrance. They stuck mine in a nerve. Not something I forget.
- Good idea! They can only improve with feedback. Where I go there's one, I am of the view she needs a holiday, but I get her talking and her aggressive way seems to subside. All the others I've encountered are very good!
