Hi Mary-Leigh, Hope you are recovering well -sounds like you are! Well my surgery went well but unfortunately the pathology results were not so great. I had been told I only had low grade DCIS, which after the mastectomy and sentinel node biopsies, I have now found out I have intermediate to high grade DCIS, an invasive cancer in the breast and cancer that has made its way to the lymph nodes. I just get puzzled that after 13 core biopsies, 2 mammograms, 2 MRIS etc etc, that none of this was identified earlier. My problem now is that I opted to have the DIEP recon at the sametime as the mastectomy, based on the information and advice of my breast surgeon and plastic surgeon. It looks like I will have to undergo radiation treatment, as the minimum, and this will affect my new recon. I did have the choice to do the recon at some time later but based on the fact that it was considered low grade DCIS, and that I would not require radiation, I opted for the immediate recon to get it all over and done with at once. I thought doing it this way would be best for my recovery and work commitments. I am feeling concerned and stressed about my decision now, but my plastic surgeon is confident he can assist with the final stage of my recon after the radiation treatment.
