How long do the aches last-first Docetaxel.

Hi.
After 3 FEC I have just had my first doxetaxel. I was really sick with FEC so it’s great not to have vomiting & nausea but yesterday the pain started.
I feel like I have the flu. My head aches, it hurts to swallow, my ears ache, my muscles are sore and even my teeth ache.

Did  anyone else feel like this? If so how long did yours last? I got used to knowing after about a week I started feeling better on FEC but this is the unknown as to wether it will last 3 weeks till the next dose or ease up.

@melclarity how did you go with it? (I think from memory you had doxetaxel? Apologies if not xx)

thanks

  • Thanks everyone . Ive been having neulasta since round 2 but it caused no pain for me the last 2 rounds. Ive had 2 panadeine forte today and it still hasnt helped much. Im feeling nauseous too now which is probably from the drugs.
My tongue & mouth is numb & has a yuk taste.
Just having one of those shit emotional days!
I will try & focus on only 2 more to go!
  • I had 3 X FEC and 3x Docetaxel.
for me the pain went after about day 7.
That could also have been because I was having Neulasta injections on day 2 and was taking Loratadine to counteract the bone pain that caused.
Perhaps even if you were not having Neulasta you could try the Loratadine (Clarytyne). It might help.
Yes, I had the ear, jaw, chest bone, hip pain, it seemed to rotate around my body at different times. I also used Panadol Osteo, Panadol, and Endone at different times.
The second and third doses were a bit better, pain wise, but possibly too as I was expecting it and handled it better.
Legs felt like lead the whole way through and I was very unsteady on my feet.
Minor neuropathy in some fingers, tongue and lips, better by week 3 and gone 3 months after finishing chemo.
Raging diarrhoea from day 1 of Docetaxel took another fortnight after finishing to settle down.
It really affected my nails, especially the thumb nails, they are still growing out the revolting lumpiness and black streaks. I finished chemo at the end of June.

Just think, only two more to go, you are 1/3 of the way through!

  • I too looked forward to just docetaxel and hercepton, after 4 AC's - thinking just one chemo drug, half as bad ... not ... I had 4 doses of both of them.   3 1/2 yrs after chemo and the leg pain and hip pain has gone, finger nails still look weird, neuropathy in feet no improvement, fingers are better, skin will never be the same (dry, sensitive) and glad you mentioned ears Sophie, have they ever mentioned what is wrong with them?  my onc was cagey about them - they still ache, a hollow ache just inside the canal and the actual ear, they can't see anything wrong with them - so they are just damaged.  No loss of hearing after chemo but I am noticing now that my hearing is not as good as it was.  The pain I would class as as bad as childbirth, not that I can remember childbirth well, but just I rocked for hours with the dox pain, just like when I was in labour.  One of the woman put me onto Advil and as long as I took all the doses it eased it, made it manageable, so whatever you take, do the full dosage  Tripletea, and start before the pain gets bad.  Of course inform your docs as they can give you something stronger.  Big hugs to you.
  • I had 4 doses of Docentaxol and Cyclophosphamide. It was 18mths ago and due to chemo brain I don't recall all my symptoms however I did a daily report on here for months. Click my picture and go to my profile. Down the side will be a list of discussions. You should find my journey of treatment in there.

  • Hi @TripleTea,

I too had 3 x FEC and 3 x Docetaxel. I was also really nauseous with FEC so welcomed Docetaxel to start with as I wasn't nauseous with it. But by day four after infusion the pain hit. Please keep in mind that everyone reacts differently so I am not suggesting that you will react in the same way I did. I am fairly drug sensitive so I had a bad reaction.  For me the pain lasted throughout treatment even after a dose reduction. I had muscle/joint pain, constipation, painful oral thrush with a really swollen tongue and bad heart burn to name a few side effects. As treatment went on it affected my finger and toe nails, loosing some and I have neuropathy in my fingers and a strange sensation in my ears. While the pain was at its worst for the 3 days after it set in which was managed with liquid morphine, once that passed it was manageable. When the pain first hits it is scary because you just don't know the time line and how long it will last. You may feel like the pain is never going to end but I just wanted to reassure you that it does ease. If you are struggling with the pain mention it to your onc and they will be able to treat it. I finished chemo in August and while I have the occasional joint pain, still find going down stairs difficult, my muscles don't want to work properly, I'm doing pretty well. It may not seem like it at the moment but it won't last, and you only have 2 more cycles (I found the 2nd Docetaxel the easiest) to go. Wishing you all the best and hope your pain eases quickly. Sophie
  • @TripleTea hey there!

Ohhh its crap isnt it!! I had Paclitaxel which is Taxol not Docetaxel, they are both taxanes but different. Taxol which is what I had for 8 weeks, caused horrendous, bone, muscle and nerve pain, it started out only a few days of the infusion and few good days before the next one. After about 5 weeks it was relentless and I was in agony until the end of the 8 weeks and then it took a long time to recover. Its 2.5yrs now since treatment for me, and I still have neuropathy in my feet, but Im managing these days with no panadol osteo, my legs still ache though when on them too long. So been an adjustment plus Im on Aromasin which like all of the meds causes aches. So Id take panadol osteo to help! Hugs Melinda xo
  • Thanks @HIT. Today is day 3 for me. At least you have given me hope it will ease & hopefully not last the whole 3 weeks. I have taken Panadol osteo and that did nothing so have now tried panadeine forte. Oh the joys x
  • Everything aches - glad you said teeth cause it sure did and ears too!!  ...  Mine started about day 3 (been a while) and lasted 5 days.  I took advil to minimize pain - it happened after every dose, sorry.  First dose was worst but that may be cause I took painkillers for the rest.
