Hormones

Hi there,

I'm on an aromatase inhibitor since a double mastectomy last November and understand that this prevents my body producing oestrogen. I am curious to know whether I need to be wary of the hormones in food as well. Does anyone have views or information about this? My breast surgeon wasn't aware of any research on this and it's a few months before I see my oncologist again.

Any advice much appreciated.

Pauline

  • Thanks for your reassurance Melinda. I'm not too bad with the exercise and balanced diet so I'm happy to hear that the Dietician keeps it that simple!

    Your program sounds very interesting:-)

    Cheers,

  • Pauline,

I'm currently doing an 8 week Rehabilitation Program through a Hospital, with it I get a Physio, Dietition, Occupational Therapist, Social Worker. 2hrs a week and its fabulous. The Dietician hour we had was very interesting. According to her the only thing to do is exercise and have a balanced diet. There are NO foods or drinks that cause Cancer regardless of what the Media keep bringing out. Everything is based on minority studies she said. Realistically when you look at it, there are many people who have bad diets and drink alot that don't get Cancer either. So do what feels good for you. Melinda :) xo

  • Many thanks for this Lisa, will definitely check these resources and suggestions out.

  • Hi Pauline,

It's Lisa from the Policy Team. It might be best to give your breast care nurse or your doctor a call. I have not come across a lot of published research on this topic, though I found this item on the Cancer Council NSW website discussing soy foods and phyto-oestrogens in relation to cancer.

Another good source of information is the Cancer Council 13 11 20 Information and Support Line, which is staffed by trained health professionals who may be able to assist.

    Warm regards,
    Lisa

  • As far as I know there are no particular dietry changes required ...except try to keep a healthy weight and ensure alcohol intake stays to about two glasses per week.
