Hormone Therapy.... Before or After Radiotherapy

Hello ladies, I just finished chemo last friday and will start radiotherapy next month for 6 weeks. Just wondering, when did you start taking hormone therapy? After or before radiotherapy? Thank you in advance.

  • My med oncologist told me to start letrazole 1 month after radiation. This is the first break I’ve had in my treatment, so looking forward to it.
  • HI.  I asked for a month off after radiation before starting Tamoxifen. Just to have a bit of time away feel a somewhat normal for a while before moving on to the next phase in the seemingly endless odyssey.
  • Hi @AA, my oncologist said one month after radiation. I am also on zoladex injections, I'm 43 and pre menopausal before chemo. I hate those jabs and maybe I will ask about getting ovaries removed. I'm in my third week of starting Arimidex and palbociclib trial. So far I haven't noticed any side effects. I'm also er positive, pr negative and her negative.
  • Thank you for your reply @LMK74. Is this your choice to start one month after radiotherapy? My oncologist would like me join the clinical trial for abemaciclib, I need to finish radiotherapy first before starting hormone therapy. I am on zoladex injection once a month. I am bit concern as my tumour is estrogen positive and I wont get to start hormone therapy for 9 weeks.

  • Hi @AA, I started Arimidex one month after my radiation finished.
  • @Zoffiel @Glemmis - many thanks for your reply.
  • Hello @AA, I started Femara 2 weeks after finishing chemo before radiotherapy. My medical oncologist said it was up to me but my radiation oncologist said if it was her she would start asap.  There used to be a theory that starting hormone therapy before radiation would "make the cells go to sleep" in her words & radiation would be unable to target them but they have disproved this now so if your doctors advise it there is no reason not to. Radiation went well & I don't think I had any extra side affects from doing the 2 together. Good luck!
  • At the same time. I was really ill after chemo so my rads were delayed for a couple of weeks but I started Femara at the same time. In theory there is no reason to delay. Like everything else, there is no way of predicting which end of the normal scale you will be on and how many side effects you may have. Only one way to find out....
