Home at Last

Wow so good to be home after six weeks in the city. So lucky to have supportive people all the way from family to stay with me, staff looking after the accomodation for country people and staff at the radiation centre.

Now to heal the radiation burns. Anyone have any magic wands out there? Was told to use lots of zinc and castor oil, don't rub off and as the broken areas heal go back to bepanthen.

So now I start Letrozole (Aromatase inhibitor or anti oestrogen) and take for the next 5 years. Was going to be Tamoxifen but radiation oncologist had blood tests and bone density test done and I am post menopausal and have good bones so she thinks it's a better option. I have been told to expect possible hot flushes and joint stiffness. I know we are all a bit different but is this what others have experienced?

  • Thanks Maryrose, myboob is actually still quite warm so I guess those little men are still flat out running around looking for the strays! The centre I went to cut off the top part of incontinence pants so you are left with a mesh boob tube which is quite soft but hold everything in place. The pain is a bit less this morning so hopefully it won't be long. Thanks Maria.

  • Ps. I kept the solugel in the fridge at the recommendation of the nurse. It feels so cool and soothing when you put it on. Really helps cool down a hot boobie!!??

  • Hi maria. Yes same gauze stuff and and dressing you mention. They made a boob tube with straps out of the soft stretchy mesh. I started peeling in the armpit area ao you can imagine how hard it was to keep it all in place!

Eventually my whole boob started to peel so had it all lathered gauzed and padded up. Had so much going on i needed my daughter to help get it all into the boob tube becauae i didnt have enough hands. Quite a sight i can laugh about it now. I found these great maternity soft crops from big w which i wore over the top.  I was told to only use solugel once the skin breaks as other products can lead to infection. The great thing was once i finished my rads  it almost healed overnight.

Good luck with it all and take care ??

  • Hi Kim,

No that was never offered to me. I had 30 fractions and have been finished for 4 days now. Guess it will just take time.

    Thanks

  • Hi Maria,

i had my first Radiation this morning and tomorrow the nurse is covering the whole breast with a silicon dressing bit like cling wrap, this dressing stays on the whole treatment, might have to be changed half way. I have 24 fractions to get though. I have meet others with this dressing and they had good results at reducing the skin burn. Has this been offered to you?

I started taking Tamoxifen last week, no reaction so far but I am waiting!

hope all goes well with you.

Just used the solugel with melolin non stick dressing twice a day. Purchased the solugel and melolin from the chemist. The solugel is clear, and quite soothing when it goes on. My skin went dark brown initially then peeled with those weepy bits here and there. Found that my bra held the dressings in the right spot and this was comfortable for me. Here's hoping that you heal very soon, cuddles, Trace ??????

  • Thanks Tracey, did you use moisturiser with the Solugel? My burns are weeping in patches and the combine dressing is soaking it up and acting as a cushion but glad to hear it might all be better in two weeks. Three days since treatment but still very sore to lift my arm and breast is still quite warm so guess it is still working from the inside out. Good chance to get the christmas cards made especially with the hot weather over the next couple days.

Hi Maria, glad that you're home and doing well. I had some burns from my rads, and the nurse recommended Solugel with a non stick dressing. The solugel helped my skin to heal quickly, and it was all clear by 2 weeks after rads finished. Hope that helps. Sending you a big cuddle, Trace ????????

  • Hi Maryrose, was the gauze stuff impregnated with a creamy/waxy sort of stuff. At the radiation clinic they give you a large roll of combine dressing to cut up and it's held in place by the body part of incontinence pants. It's about 6-7 inches wide, mesh that soft and elastic. Yes what a site to behold, big pad under the arm, another under the boob and an eye patch over the nipple! I can image what it would have looked like if you'd lost the lot. Gotta laugh. Yes I found the moo goo so good at the start. They gave me Solugel when it was starting to get sore and then they gave me xylocaine gel and bepanthen when it started to break open. So will slather up and see how it goes. Thanks Maria

  • Hey there. I burnt quite badly when i had rads. Peter mac nurses provided solugel which i lathered on as much as i could throughout the day. I was given this gauzy film stuff to put on as well and then covered the whole lot with like a plastized cotton wool. Apologies cant remember the technical names. I wore a crop to keep it all in place. Almost lost it all walking down the street once!

You will find the burns heal really quickly. Once healed moo goo is the best product out there. I still use it for massaging.

I am on tamoxifen and hot flushes are the norm for me.

    Take care????
