High Temperature on Taxol

Yesterday sucked.
My wife is getting close to the end of Taxol/carboplatin: 8 down, 4 to go. She gets the infusions on Thursdays. Yesterday (Sunday) she was feeling pretty tired all day. I just thought it was fatigue, and by the time I thought to take her temperature it was 5 pm.
37.4 C
Over the next hour we arranged for a friend to come and look after the kids, and by 6 pm her temperature had reached 38 C and we were on our way into the Emergency department.
At ED her temperature was 37.4 again. They quickly got some bloods and other samples, spoke to the on-call Medical Oncologist and put her on antibiotics. The antibiotics made her nauseous but that settled. This was about 10 pm.
She was transferred to her ward and spent the night.  She is still there now (630 am) and is receiving the next antibiotic treatment.
Her white cell count is low, and has been hovering quite low for the last couple of cycles.
She feels ok, and I think she was dehydrated. Just waiting for her to see an MO.
  • Sorry to hear strongtogether, but you are in the right place to get the treatment that is needed.
I’ve known of other people having this issue during Paclitaxel
and missed their treatment, don’t worry to much .Sending gentle hugs to everyone.
  • Thanks ladies.
Her bloods are really low. She has had a unit of blood and will keep getting the injections for pumping up the white blood cells - cant remember the name.
They will keep her in for at least another night (tonight) and I'm guessing Tuesday too and maybe even Wednesday.
Her MO says it might be a good idea to delay this weeks Taxol, all things considered.
  • Hopefully after 48 hours of IVABs when the cultures all come back negative (fingers crossed) she can head home, never fun to end up in ED (I know from the other side, the nurse rushing to get the first dose in a febrile neutropenic patient)
  • So Sorry to hear of last night’s drama with your wife’s temp spike and nausea @strongtogether - that would have been incredibly frightening for all of you.  You did the right thing by going to ED and with her staying in overnight for observation.  I hope things have settled down today.

keep the fluids up and all the best to both of you with her ongoing treatments xxx
