Hematoma Treatment

Hi lovely ladies. I have had a lumpectomy and had radiation which was finished on 18th of December. Last week I developed a really .arge and painful hematoma which has been dained but teturned swollen and painful again within 3 days. I have looked for information about treatment and causes but haven't found much. Has anyone else had one and had it treated effectively? I have another hospital appointment on Wed this week. I would appreciate any information you have.

Thanks in advance :)

  • Hi Chris,

Thanks for your response. I am sorry you had to go through all of that it must have been really unpleasant for you.

I will get the Hirudoid cream that sounds like a good idea. I had my surgery over 3 months ago and other than a seroma and some skin celulitis it has been quite smooth. Seems strange for me to get this when everything was healed up. I go again to the hospital tomorrow so hopefully we will get it resolved.

    Good luck with your recovery

    Love and wishes Nadine

  • Hi Viv

Thanks for your reply. A Hematoma is a lump full of blood. Very different from a seroma which is just fluid.

I have just started swimming again and not sure if I have torn the tissues under my scar as I swim quite fast.

As it has filled up again very quickly I'm a bit concerned. I went to the hospital today to have it drained but no one there to do it so have to go back tomorrow.

Good luck with your recovery. I will see the physio again once they get to the bottom of this.

    Love and blessings,

    Nadine

  • Hi Vivacious,

I also had lumpectomy 30/04/13 and 6 weeks radiation.  I have a seroma, is that the same as a hematoma? Fluid build-up between lymph scar and breast scar.  A big sore lump :(

I was left pretty much on my own through this, no assistance from breast care nurse, who apparently should have given me exercises or referred me to a physio.  Breast Surgeon sent me to have ultrasound, but that was it. My Onco finally sent me to a lymphedema physio, (the seroma blocked the lymph system and gave me lymphedema in my truck, fluid built up all across my back, it was very painful). Hubbie was shown how to massage fluid away.

Do you have exercises? Have you seen a Physio? If not, you need to.

One thing that has been wonderful for me is the swimming pool. If all your wounds have healed, get the ok for swimming.  Great exercises for the arm, and the pressure of the water on the body is great.

Search seroma's on this site as well.

    Take care,

    Viv
