Hi Lorraine and Teresa,
Lorraine, I'm so sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis, and at such a young age it is particularly sad. This awful disease touches so many people.
I was diagnosed early October and have been through a lumpectomy, a cycle of IVF, 6 chemo treatments and then finally a double mastectomy in May. I was 34 when I was diagnosed and my hubby and I had been trying for kids for 4 years previously so the fertility thing was particularly tough for me. I've come to terms with it all now though and will be eternally gratefully to the wonderful team of docs and nurses who have cared for me for the past few months. I think they are all amazing.
If either of you have any questions at all or I can help in any way please don't hesitant to message me. Happy to answer any questions (no matter how silly they seem!!)
At the beginning of my journey I was absolutely terrified and thought I couldn't do it but I've come out the other end now and you will too. Just try to take it one step at a time otherwise it all gets a bit overwhelming. And I would also recommend walking every day if you can thought the chemo, it really does help. I also found the Pilates DVD in the My Journey pack really helpful....the exercises aren't particularly difficult but I found them very relaxing and it became part of my daily routine after my walk round the park! It's funny how these little things help you through.
Teresa...I found that each of my chemo treatments gave me similar side effects each time so at least I knew what to expect.
I'm not sure what chemo you are on but mine was called FEC-T (3 treatments with drugs called FEC and then 3 treatments with a drug called Taxotere). I had 3-4 days of feeling pretty average with nausea after my FEC treatments and then back to normal again for a couple of weeks. And with Taxotere I didn't really have any side effects apart from achey neck and shoulders for 1 day afterwards.
With the FEC side effects I would highly recommending asking your onc to increase your dosage of Dexamethasone (anti-nausea) as this made a huge difference for me and reduced the nausea to only 1 day which was great.
Where are you both based? I'm in Melbourne and would be happy to meet up for a chat if you feel it would help?
Lots of love and hugs to you both xxxxxxx
