Has anyone had vitamin c infusions on taxol herceptin and perjeta

Hi ladies
Has anyone had vitamin c infusions with the above drugs? I am going to have my first infusion of vit c on Monday after having my first taxol last Wednesday. I did ask the hospital but as usual the medical professional normally frown on natural therapies so the answer I received was what I expected. Of course no one died of vit c and I have horrible toxic poisons currently swirling through my system but still I thought I would ask if anyone has had them and mixed them with my treatment. I also drink grapefruit juice daily in which no one informed me not to and I just read it reacts with chemo but hey Im not dead yet doing this. Hopefully someone on here has done the vit c infusions and can advise me. Thanks in advance....

  • Thanks for the information supplied Kathy. That's one of the great things about this forum - even if the feedback isn't relevant to some, there are so many other ladies who will learn and benefit.

  • Hi Sam

This is Kathy from BCNA's Policy Team. We always recommend to women that they talk to their doctors, especially their medical oncologist, about any vitamin supplements or other natural therapies they are thinking of using. There is evidence that high doses of Vitamin C can reduce the effectiveness of chemotherapy, including for breast cancer. This would be why your doctors have recommended against having Vitamin C infusions. Other supplements, such as St John's Wort, can also make chemotherapy less effective.

There is really good, reliable information about interactions between herbs, vitamin supplements including Vitamin C and other products on the Memorial Sloane Kettering Cancer Centre's Herbs website. There is also an app you can download to your phone.

    Hope this helps.

    Kathy

  • Hey. I have been taking some supplements through chemo but have been cautious with what and how much. My onc was happy for me to have any supplements as long as it wasn't intravenous or high dose which I have avoided. I have had vit c in a low dose though. I also have turmeric in cooking and switched to organic food and minimal sugar. It is best to take on board what the oncologist says but I know the research into antioxidants is not extensive and varies. Go wth your gut. A lot of the things you see online can be misleading. Do you see a naturopath? My GP is a naturopathic doctor so I take her advice with that of my oncologist. Good luck
