Handy Hints

Hi Ladies, thought it might be a nice idea to post hints for getting through the journey.... you know the stuff the nurses don't tell you. I have learnt more from my BC sisters than any other source so here goes. I had a really bad metallic taste and nothing tasted nice until I started eating with a plastic fork this really helped. Looking forward to hearing all of your tips x Hils

  • Isn't it funny that water can taste terrible while on chemo? I think I bought every drink in the supermarket and couldn't have citrus flavours because of heartburn. My drink of choice turned out to be decaffeinated diet coke! Can't stand it now, but it helped me flush those chemo drugs out of my system, had to drink 2 litres a day for the first 3 days after chemo.

My breast care nurses told me about plastic cutlery but didn't have to use it, also Biotene toothpaste and mouthwash.

The tip I'll pass on is clean your teeth properly before you eat or many hours after, that way you avoid the vomiting.

Black nail polish if you are on Taxotere to prevent the sun reacting with the chemo in your nail beds. I did this for months and didn't lose a nail and they've grown back stronger than before.

    With love

  • I found that drinking the clear non fizzy lemon or lime flavoured mineral waters helped remove the awful taste of water while on chemo. It took me till my last chemo cycle to discover this, but it made a huge difference to the way water tasted. Chris xx
