Hair Regrowth

Hi all

I just wanted to ask if anyone has any advice on how to avoid hair regrowth after chemo being dark and curly?

A friend told me someone she know shaved her head a few more times once it started to grow back and this removed most of the damaged hair and soon was replaced with her usual lighter straighter locks.

Has anyone else experienced this and if so did it work? My hair has started to grow back (have 2 more cycles to go) but hair is couple of cm long and still fine, straight and not too dark. How long till can tell if curls etc?

Many thanks in advance!

B :)

  • The first time mine grew back pretty straight bit it was only about 2-3cm long when i lost it again due to another 2 rounds of chemo post op. This time its grown back curly and was a little darker than before. Starting to lighten up ever so slightly but the curls show no sign of dissappearing yet. Im 6 months post last chemo. I kind of like them actually!

  • My hair before was very straight, when it grew back it was very curly on the top very tight curls and silver grey. It is no longer curly but not as thick as it used to be. Unfortunately it is growing back everywhere else as well.

  • Hi, it took 10wks for the first few hairs to sprout on my head. So there was no way I would have shaved the little I had. When It got past the fur stage( 4mths) it curled and was the colour of steel wool.Around 7mths I had it coloured and trimmed. My hair gradually grew lighter( my original colour) but the curl didn't drop out until 18mths.Since the chemo/bald experience I have never complained about my hair cos I'm just sooooo grateful to get it back. I was worried I might be permanently bald which horrified me.We all seem to have slightly different hair re growth stories. Good luck with yours.xx

  • Hi,

I'm 6 1/2 weeks post AC chemo and my hair is growing back sooooo slowwwwly.  It's very fine, fair and stands up on end! I can still see my scalp so not prepared to go out 'au naturel'. I already had curly hair and would hate for it to be any curlier. I'm trying to be patient and it's about as exciting as watching grass grow.  Every morning my kids comment they can see more hair!! I haven't heard of the process of frequently shaving my hair. I guess I'm just cherishing the fur that's mysteriously appeared on my head!! All the best with your hair growth. I'd be interested in seeing how you go.

  • Mine grew back curly (had been grey but dyed for years) I had it trimmed so it didn't  look like an afro & probably before a year  was up it had started to  grow back straight. I also asked onc about dying it & she said anytime  but maybe it had to be long enough  for the hairdresser to get hold of !!

  • Mine came back curly( but not too bad) and after 6 months, the curls just started to drop out.Now it is straight again, lile it used to be,and I'm 2 years past treatment.Cheers Robyn

  • Hi there

Mine was dark, soft , straight and stood straight up like a chimpanzee baby's for about 3.5 months then literally one day I woke up and it was curly. We were on holidays at the time and I thought it was the humidity but the curls have not disappeared. I have had curls for 5 months now.  I've not heard about the shaving to stop the curls before. I'd be interested to know if this works or not. Karen
