Hair loss

I've only just joined so hopefully it will help me a lot. I finished my Chemo in January 2010 & within a month my hair started to come thru..not thick but at least it was coming back. In the last 2months it seems to be getting thinner on the top..it's OK at the sides & back..I was just wondering if anyone else has gone thru this & what did they do for it...Please help...

    Well it sounds like we are on the same time line with our hair.I didn't complete all my chemo rounds because I ended up in hospital isolation with no white cells.My oncologist thought Taxotere was "too strong"for me and wanted to swap me over.I decided to stop it and he was ok about it so long as I took Tamoxifen.I didn't have lymph node involvement and body scans clear so I weighed it up and felt that anymore chemo might do more damage than good. So I guess that's why I didn't get any peripheral problems.After I stopped I was completely bald for 2mths and my oncologist then informed me that Taxotere was a lot "harder"on your hair follicles-wish I'd known that beforehand! The slow hair growth made me quite depressed .Like you,8mths on and all I've got is grey curly fluff about 2cms in length.I am soooo over hearing comments about my hair and how it's coming in different bla bla. Next week I'm going to get a colour and cut and hope it doesn't fall out!Good luck with your hair woes.

    Hi Tonya It's also been 8 months since my chemo finished and still have very short and very grey 'fluffy' curly hair which is fairly thin on top. I didn't wear a wig when I was bald but opted for scarves but thank goodness I didn't have to wear them in the summer as they would have been very hot. I was also on Taxotere and Herceptin in the 2nd round of chemo and have just finished my Herceptin infusions. I am still on Arimidex so don't expect things to change for quite a while. I can now say that I am really a 'grey nomad'. Have just started using this network and only wish I had started much earlier when first diagnosed as was a very lonely and scary time even though I had great support from family and friends. Can remember longing to be able to talk to someone who was going through the same thing at that time. One thing I haven't noticed anyone having problems with as far as I have read is peripheral neuropathy which has hit me pretty hard. Very painful and debilitating at times. I was always a very active person enjoying tennis, golf, bike riding and walking and now can't do any of that. I have it in my hands and feet and wonder if anyone else is suffering the same after effects. I still haven't been able to return to work which has been quite financially draining as I thought I would be back at work within a few months and now it's been 16 months since my op. Sorry to have waffled on so. All the best on the rest of your journey or should we call it our 'nightmare'. Regards

    Thanks Tonya, I will give that site a look at and good to here your going OK. Lucky you in having curly hair, is it the same colour as before?

    Sorry to hear about your hair saga.Mine has taken forever to grow.It's been 8mths since chemo finished and I have very short curly hair that I can't do a thing with.For awhile there I thought I would stay bald and when I googled I stumbled across a website-www.aheadofourtime.org They are a group of women who stayed bald after having Taxetore chemo. I joined them because I thought this had happened to me.They are a very supportive,lovely bunch of ladies from all over the world.Anyway,I think I'm ok now . I don't know if this helps you in any way.Good luck louise.

    Sorry to hear about your hair saga.Mine has taken forever to grow.It's been 8mths since chemo finished and I have very short curly hair that I can't do a thing with.For awhile there I thought I would stay bald and when I googled I stumbled across a website-www.aheadofourtime.org They are a group of women who stayed bald after having Taxetore chemo. I joined them because I thought this had happened to me.They are a very supportive,lovely bunch of ladies from all over the world.Anyway,I think I'm ok now .     Hi girls

    I havent been on for a while...I forgot where the site was...must still have chemo brain!!! Anyway here I am again. Nothing much has changed since last I was on, my hair is still thinning..I'm trying not to worry about it but it is so hard. I have been using Nioxin religiously for the last 6 weeks but can't feel any new hair growing. Have you had any body else with the same thing happening to them? It would be interesting to here their story.

    Other than that I am feeling really well & getting on with life..hope all is good with you to.

    That's great Louise .... hope being part of a group close by can give you lots of support, and you will be able to return the favour to the ladies you meet there
