Gum Problems

Hi all - have had a really sore mouth for a few days so I went to dentist who said i have a gum infection.  So have started on antibotics.

Today I went to have my 9 weekly bone scan and the dr asked me if i have had a sore mouth.  Told her i have gum infection and she just said ok.  Something showed up on the scan - now i am terrified i have cancer of the jaw - has anyone else had any problems like this.

Thanks

Deb

  • Hi ladies thanks for your replies - @ Amanda I am currently on Zometa every 6 wks since Oct - but the gum is feeling so much better after the antibotics so I think all is ok, only have to wait now till tomorrow morning so I have been trying to keep myself busy!!  No too hard with two kids wanting you to be taxi driver - lol.

  • Are you having a bone scan because you already have bone mets? Sorry I don't know your history. Are you on any bisphosphonates? I have had things show up on bone scans that have been false positives and related to chemo. It is possible that the scan is showing inflammation in the area that has been infected. I ask about the bisphosphonates as there is a risk of getting osteonecrosis of the jaw. I had lots of mouth issues on my last treatment and used salt water gargles and diffuse when they were very sore. I did end up in hospital with neutropenia and throat issues due to my ulcers which could not be reached with gargles and the like. If you are concerned page your dr and ask them questions. I hope that it is all ok and your mouth feels better soon. Amanda xx

  • Deb get yourself some Biotene, there is a mouthwash a gum, a gel, a spray and toothpaste. It is not as harsh as all the other toothpastes. Also a soft brush and brush gently after each feed. It will go away - but it does take time. It was recommended by the chemo nurses.

All the best - all you can do is rest. Get yourself the cancer council meditation cds so you can listen to them to help you relax and stay positve.

  • Hi Deb. I went and got all my dental work done before chemo as i was advised to.I suffered ulcers in my mouth and down my throat to my stomach. The chemo if thats what uve had kills the good cells as well.Im hoping thats all it is for you and the scan is only picking up an infection.I didnt have regular scans. Goodluck with it all.I know we always think the worst at every pain and illness.try to not worry to much.i know its easier said than done xx
