Govt to cut what it pays for Docetaxel by 70% on 1st Dec onwards
Just read this in the Australian Dr online mag:
Chemotherapy services in private hospitals could be slashed due to a decision to cut Federal Government funding for chemotherapy drugs, says the Australian Private Hospitals Association (APHA).
The APHA warned the cost of providing treatment to thousands of cancer sufferers could rise by $100 per infusion after the decision to cut PBS subsidies for docetaxel by 70%, The Australian reports.
The drug is used to treat breast, ovarian, prostate and lung cancer, with cuts to the PBS saving the federal government about $40 million a year.
The Federal Govt Health Minister explains that they expect the drug manufacturers to cut the cost of the drug because it is overpriced and if this happens, then patients won't be paying any more, the drug companies will be charging less. Is this a realistic expectation? it sounds rather Alice in Wonderland to me!!!
