Genetic testing?

After having been through brain tumour, invasive thyroid cancer then breast cancer (all primary, unrelated and no known previous family history of any of them), my neurosurgeon has posed the question if I should consider having genetic testing done. Wondering if there is anyone out there who has had this done and what it entails? I realise it won't make any difference as to whether or not I get anything else in the future but may give some indication of what may need to be monitored more closely - and I am thinking that the info may be handy for my sons too.

  • Thank you to those who have posted. And thanks for letting me know what is involved - so simple. May have some problems with family health history on my Dad's side as he was adopted (adoptive parents both died before I was born) and never spoke about his origins (told me a little but not much - it was also at a time when his birth was not registered until he was adopted).

    Thanks again.

  • I have had testing done. Interview and blood test.

I had two other family members who have had breast cancer, so had test after my daughter expressed wishes to know what her risk is.

  • Same as Helen, I had genetic testing done, I spent a couple of hours being interviewed, discussions on family history, myself and what I wanted out of the testing and then a blood test.

Results took a coupld of weeks in coming, another appointment and interview to discuss the results and thats it.

  • Hi Tracy,

I have had genetic testing done. It entailed an interview about family history and a blood test.

    Helen.
