Gabapentin for hot flushes

Appointment today at the womans menopause and cancer clinic to see if i can get these revolting hot flushes under control.

What a wonderful  womans clinic. They have so many different medical specialists all under one roof  that you can see one after the other on the same appointment.. Then they all discuss treatments for you.

The treatment they have decided for me to help  reduce the incidence and severity of  my hot flushes is try me on  Gabapentin first.

The reason i am having a bad run with the hot flushes is apparently due to being on three medications at once that cause flushes.......... Tamoxifen---Zoladex --- Cymbalta all cause  hot flushes and  sweating.

I will try anything at the moment as it has really become unbearable, the weather heating  up would not be helping either.  I am so over this, i just want everything to go away.  Lets see if Gabapentin works.

Cheers Joxx

  • Hi Tonya and Sarah, some good news on gabapentin so far.

It has definitely reduced the intensity of the flushes. They feel as though they dont last as long and are a  little bit less hot if that makes any sense. ( Mind you there has not been a real hot day since i started on them)

Every now and then i still get a few real distressing ones still that just about burn my head off but over all i think it is working so far.   I find i get more flushes/sweats when im in doors rather than out doors.

My flushes use to happen  in clusters, i would get several one after the other over a short period  of time,  then none for an hour,  then it would start  again. Gabapentin seem to be controlling this some what. I havent had to have a dripping wet towel wrapped around my neck all day.

I dont know how long i am suppose to wait to see if works, but i paid for  three months supply at the hospital clinic. so i guess i  need to trial it for  that long.  I will keep you up to date with the out come in a few weeks ok

  • You are a good sport to act as guinea pig for us.I hope it works for you.I hate that we have to take another drug to counteract the side effects of another.Feel like I'm turning into a junkie!

  • Hi Jo

Thanks for all the info have had a good read will try an ignore all the side effects as I know the drug companies have to legally declare them. Please keep me updated with your progress. The effixor is ok but if the sweating was more controlled at work I would feel fine. Have to brush it off with the "it's my time of life" speech!! with rivers pouring down my face! ha ha.

    Cheers and good luck

  • Well you can be the trail blazer and let us other poor buggers know if Gaba works.I thought I would try and wean myself off Endep but I picked the hottest week to try.Have been waking and sweating all night for the last 4 nights. Can't stand it so going back on my usual 10mg.I think it really helps.Sarah,I originally tried Effexor and I was a drooling mess that couldn't get off the chair! Maybe the dose was too high.I think that endep helps with sweating.

  • I was really interested to read you are going to take Gabapentin. I have a lot of sweating and hot flushes from tamoxifen and have been taking a small dose of effixor (an anti-depressant) for a few months, it has helped with the frequency of the flushes but I stil have terrible sweating which can be really embarassing. I would really like to know how you get on as it's something I could ask my Onco about.

Good luck and I do hope it works or decreases the symptoms.
