first radiotherapy today

Today I will start my first radio of 16 treatments. Its the next stage in my treatment. I am a bit nervous. have been using the sorbelene on my boob and it was suggested to use a non aluminium deodorant and dove soap. so have implemented all of these. Hope it all goes well, and now at the tail end of treatment except for tamoxifen. Have my radio after work each day which will be a commitment for 3 weeks.

hope you are all well or healing

  •  I didn't feel too tired throughout my nearly 5 weeks of radiotherapy but it helped that I didn't have to go to work as my job was made redundant a month after my lumpectomy in March. It meant that I could go in the mornings, have the treatment, and be home within minutes to shower, cream the radiated breast, and rest for a good hour or so.. I live only 5 minutes away from the hospital so there was no travelling time to worry about either. So all this helped cut the stress and fatigue. If anything I felt more uncomfortable when the breaking skin started under the breast, even though I looked after myself so well throughout radiotherapy. The last 3 weeks was made up of hospital visits as the nurses changed the dressing and checked to see that my breast was starting to heal, so I felt tired by the end of all this.  I had my appointment with my Oncologist today and he is very happy with everything so far, and I am starting to heal emotionally and physically. I have gone back to my dietician / nutritionist and my Oncologist was very happy to hear that as he explained being inactive and overweight is linked to recurrences down the track. The need to eat lots more fish and salmon and other Omega 3 foods is very important too. So my goal now is to take off another 15 kllos and walk to get fit. I just need a walking partner as my husband gets home too late and as he has a physical job he just wants to come home and rest.  lol    I might join a walking group in my local area, or the other option is to hire a good treadmill.

We are looking  to go away either in late August or September but not sure where yet. Hopefully we will decide by the end of this month.

Take Care Marg and remember to rest when you get home after each treatment, have your cool showers, and " cream" as much as you can.

  • I am glad the tamoxifen is going well for you - I hope that will be the same for me. I have had 3 treatments already and have a calendar at work to mark each one off. I go in after work and am not there long at all - about 20 minutes. The staff are lovely and they have a lovely picture on the ceiling to look at while I am having the treatment. the 3 weeks will go fast and then not long until bali now.

I am putting the cream on as much as I can and hope the skin can take it.

Did you get really tired during your treatment?

It has been a crazy year thats for sure - could not have guessed it would have turned out like this at all. but I have bali and a cruise to look forward to after a tough time.

    you look after yourself too

  • I have done 3 treatments, staff are lovely. arrive after work and in and out in no time.  so far so good.

    thanks

  • Good luck with it all Marg. I am sure you will breeze through it. Just remember to cream as much as possible and to rest after you have had a cool shower. I had no problems throughout my 20 treatments over 4 weeks it was only after I finished that I had some breaking skin. It took another 3 weeks for it to heal and this week I am so much better. I did everything I was supposed todo but couldn't avoid the breaking skin when treatment finished. Going in everyday for 4 weeks was definitely a commitment but I met some lovely people that I got to know over the 4 weeks going through treatment, the medical staff were wonderful and before you know it its all finished. I was given a little teddy bear when I finished and I have named him Basil.  lol   The Tamoxifen is going well for me and I am sure it will for you too when you start the hormone treatment. It's been a crazy year so far for us Marg but we are getting there, stronger than ever. If you need to know anything please let me know.

    Take Care

  • Good luck today, I'm sure it will go well. I had 30 treatments and the only problem was around No. 20 with some broken skin. The lovely nurses dressed it every day and it healed very quickly once treatment had finished. It will be good to have one more step completed in your treatment. Take care,
