First cycle of chemo

Hello everyone,

I am starting my first cycle of TC Chemo today at 11.20am.

It will be for a duration of 3 months, every 21 days.

I had 25mm ductual carcinoma removed with breast conserving surgery on 20th Oct. 2011. It was a grade 3, ER Pos. Her2 neg. Can anyone with a similar experience give me some tips on what to expect, side effects they experienced and anything else they think may be helpful.

Thanking everyone on this amazing forum for all their input, care, concern and willingness to share.

Maria L

  • Hi Maria, I had TC and finished my 4 cycles at the end of March. My cancer was 21mm and invasive ductal with no nodes involved. The chemo wasn't too bad. I had similar symptoms as those already mentioned above. I was more worried about the first cycle as I didn't know what to expect. I took all the different things prescribed, as the Dr said it is easier to prevent nausea than to treat it. I found the 4th to the 6th days the worst due to the aches and pains, but learnt that panadol Every 4 hours really helped that. Day 4 was my blob day. It was also a Sunday, and I would stay on the lounge most of the time. I alao found that eating tended to lessen the nausea, a bit like it was with morning sickness. By week 3, when all side effects seemed to be gone, another one would arise, and this was weeping eyes. They were actually really dry, and this caused me to tear up. Refresh liquigel drops were very soothing. They are a bit thicker than the normal artificial tears, and you buy them over the counter at the chemist. I also found the Biotene mouth products good. One other thing that I discovered at the very end, was that the lime and lemon flavoured clear mineral water in the pump packs were delicious. To me water tasted horrible during chemo, but this mineral water was refreshing and seemed to hide the awful metallic tasting water that chemo creates. Good luck with everything. The time does go quickly, and my hair is returning and it is very curly. Love Chris xx
  • Hi Maria , I just finished my TC chemo on the 1 of november, my cancer was same as your just that it was a bit 29mm and no lymph involvement. Each one of us reacts different to chemo but I can tell you how mine , on the day of the chemo i was fine feeling full of energy and hungry probably from dexamethasone, than by day 3 i began to have a funny taste in my mouth and my tongue was covered in a white fur , I found that Biotene tooth paste and mouth wash helped a lot. Also in the first three days I made sure that I drunk 10 glasses of water helps your kidneys eliminate all the toxins.During this time I eat soft foods , puree fruits and lemonade . The first week after chemo I was very tired and had lots and lots of nannas naps , by week two I start improving being back to normal by week three. I keep a diary noting my temperature ,which I took twice a day as if the temperature reaches 38 its a trip to emergency room, and my symptoms and how I managed them . I know this  is  a very anxious time for you now , but the doctors will give you medications to manage the nausea and vomiting , if you find that you are to anxious just tell the nurses and they will arange to have something to calm your nerves down. A very important thing: Nausea is easier to manage before its sets in so take whatever medication they give you for it. Just be kind to yourself and rest when you need to to not overdo things, use those months to look after yourself and beat this disease, if you are offered help accept it and  do not feel bad about it. Come on this site as often as you need to and vent your feeling I found the ladies here have a lot of knowledge and they are very helpfull I know it helped me a lot. You can do this ,good luck and  I hope my info helped. Regards Monica
