Finished treatment - trying to get my life back on track

Well here I am trying to recover from finishing all my treatment for Tripple Negative Breast Cancer. I had 4 sessions of TC which I completed on the 22n July 2014 and then had 4 weeks of radiation which I completed on the 12 Sept 2014. I am so relieved that my treatment is over yet I feel that I have just become a number to the oncology team. I feel I don't even have an oncologist to go to anymore since I've seen different ones all the time. I thought it was standard practice that after you complete your treatment you get a blood test and a heart check to make sure that everything is ok after having such harsh treatment but instead I got... See you in February 2015. I am still suffering from oral thrush (tongue feeling weird and white) and had a course of Nystatin, anti fungal lozenges, and 1month course of Diflucan but nothing has worked. I have cut all sugars, dairy and carbohydrates from my diet and still there is no change. I just want to get back to normal where I don't have to worry about what foods I eat. I have been on antibiotics during the course of my treatment because I don't have a spleen so I decided to stop that medication just in case that is what is causing me to have oral thrush. When I told my GP this he told me it was risky because I have an impaired immune system due to the fact I have no spleen and I've had chemo. He is also reluctant to make desicions about my medication because I'm under the care of Oncologists yet I feel as if I don't even have one. So now I'm feeling as if I'm alone and not sure who I see for my medical issues. Anyway on a positve note I have joined a gym and go everyday and really enjoying it, I'm really trying to get my fitness back on track. I have volunteered to sell pink ribbon day merchandise at Whatergardens Shopping Centre this Thursday which I'm really looking forward too. I'm now seeing a dietician for this thrush problem and hoping she can recommend something. I've been meditating to take away all my stress and anxiety. I am really trying to get myself back to my "new normal" life. Hopefully all my obstacles will disappear so I can concentrate on healing myself.

  • This sounds interesting....drinking coke! I'm going to try it and hopefully it will work for me. Fingers crossed! I've been told to avoid anything with sugar because thrush feeds on sugar. If it works Il'll be letting my GP and dietician know all about it. Thanks for the tip!
  • Thank you for all of your advice and support throughout my journey.

  • Ask for an earlier appointment with the onc, I am sure they will accomodate you. It is all a bit strange when you finish treatment I agree, you have been off every day having treatment and then bam nothing. It does start to feel better though, just don't push yourself too much.

    Sending you hugs

  • I know exactly what you mean, about feeling like just another number. When I finished treatment,I was like, don't they want to do scans, don't they want to do blood tests? How will I know if it comes back? But do you know what, now 12 months on,I can honestly see that the followup appointments combined with our own diligence, are perfectly adequate.Donna is so right when she says,it does start to feel better!! It's really hard to understand that though, when you are just at the end of your treatment, and also because you have the added problem of no spleen.Going to the gym, seeing a dietician, are all fantastic things to be doing to get your body back on track. It takes time,so don't expect miracles.I am 10 months past my last chemo, and it is probably the last 2 or 3 months that I can say that I feel really fantastic.Stay in touch, because this is just what this blog is for... Before and after support.CheersxoxRobyn
