Finding out

On the 8th December I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Like anyone who hears these words, your word and all that you knew and thought about your furture comes tumbling down around you. Most upsetting is seeing my family upset. It is terrible to find out that something has been growing inside you and spreading throughout your body and that you have no knowledge of it at all.

I spent most of 2011 raising my baby girl who was born in December '10. It was a tummultuous year to say the least and I just felt that I was really coming to grips with motherhood. I was down to one feed in the evening and our little girl it just the sweetest thing on this earth. She is loved so much and by so many people.

When my milk supply dropped off I felt a lump in the upper outer part of my left breast. In the back of my mind I hoped that it was a blocked duct of some blockage from the residual milk from feeding my DD (dear daughter). I visited the GP who was not concerned and felt that it was "ropey" and moveable. This explanation seemed rational to me so away I went. A month or so later I felt another small pea like lump right next to this larger one and again my concern grew. Being in the industry I work, radiation therapy, I wasn't ok with just letting this go. So off I went for an unltrasound.

That was one of the scariest days and something I really should not have done on my own. From that day things were never the same. I was sent for US guided biopsies of the 2 lumps, mammograms and more US of both breasts. Again I made the mistake of going to those appointments on my own. I was a complete wreck in the waiting room. Facing looks that basically spelt out "these are suspicious lesions". My heart and word were breaking apart. I got home to my mum, waiting with my dd and just fell apart.

It was an agonising wait to see the breast surgeon the next day. To tell my husband and I that I had breast cancer. That both lumps were positive for ductal carcinoma and that they had also found some cancer cells in the FNA they took from a node in my arm pit.

From that day the rollercoaster of the last month and a half began...

  • Hi Kelly My diagnosis came in October so I feel like I have just been where you are now...it is just a horrible place to be, and I am sorry that you are there dealing with this diagnosis. I am 37 & have a 3 yr old, 6, &8 yr old & was just trying to get through motherhood when I got my diagnosis too. I had a right mastectomy 10 days after diagnosis but did not need chemo or rad as my lymph nodes were clear. Like the other girls have said, this is a great place to cry and vent so come on here whenever you are feeling down, get good news, or just want to read how others are going in their similar journey. I hope you are starting to find your feet again, Lots of love Sam xo

  • Hi Kelly, what a dreadful couple of months you have had. Cancer really suxs, and we can all understand how frightened you are at the moment. You are so young and it is so unfair. I hope you will find this site helpful as you start your treatment. There are many ladies here who have been where you are now. This is a great place to rant and rave and cry and ask questions. There is a lot of support here, and I hope we can give you all the support that you need. Have you had surgery yet, or chemotherapy? I am 14 months down the track, and am feeling great now. I have had a double mastectomy and had chemo, lost my hair, but it is growing back well. I have had my 4th haircut today. It is very curly, but this will gradually go and my normal hair should return soon. I wish you well with all your treatments. Love Chris xx

  • Your story is so sad - no young mum should have to face a breast cancer diagnosis. It is just so unfair. You should be enjoying your baby without having to think about breast cancer,We understand how you feel. It's a shock and you don't get much time to process it all so that it almost seems like a bad dream when you wake in the morning. No doubt you've had surgery and possibly started treatment.Blog on this site whenever you are scared, want  info or just want to vent. Some ladies here are in the midst of treatment and some, like me, are well and truly over it and have rejoined the human race. I've had bc twice- 2003 and then again in the same breast in 2010. It's hard going but you will get through it. We are here to support you.
