Finally Finished!!

It's been a while since I posted on here.   Have been very busy with treatment and building a new house!!!

I had my last radio today!   I can't believe I have finally finished.    Six months of chemo and 7 weeks of radiotherapy.   I'm really happy and I feel great.    However, when I saw my oncologist on Tuesday she told me I would not be given a mamogram and ultrasound until March 2013.     This feels like a long way away to me and I want to have one now so they can tell me there is no cancer there.    Probably silly, but I really want to know that it's all clear.    Is it the norm to wait this long to be tested after treatment?

Hope everyone is doing well.

  • Hi Jo

Firstly congrats on finishing treatment - it's a great feeling isn't it!  I finished in May (all chemo, no radio) and felt like I'd climbed Everest I was so chuffed with myself!  LOL!

Just regarding your mammogram and ultrasound perhaps you could discuss your concern with your oncologist and say you want it done now instead of March next year.

If you still meet resistance from the oncologist, then I'd go to your GP and request it from him/her, explaining your concern.  I'm sure someone will assist you get that peace of mind.

    Remember - there's always a way around things.  :)

    Good luck

    cheers

  • What a great day for you, finally finishing your treatment. I too felt the same way regarding scans when my radiation was over. My doctor said my breast needed time to settle down and heal, before getting another mammogram. I finished in April and didn't get scans until September, but like Helen said maybe chat to your GP. Wishing you all the best Penny xx
  • Thanks Penny and Helen.     I saw my chemo oncologist yesterday and she told me that I should be tested on the anniversary of my surgery, which is December.   I am seeing my surgeon next week, so will sort it out with him.    Penny, my radiation oncologist also said that I had to wait for my breast to settle down and heal from the radiation before they can do a mammogram, so maybe I will just have to be patient!    Easier said than done sometimes, but for the moment I think I'll just enjoy the fact that I have finished treatment and can spend some time away from that hospital!!!!

  • Glad you've spoken to your oncologist.  I think the surgeon is the way to go in terms of when to have the tests done.  Let us know how you go.

    cheers
