Femara

I have been on Femara for about 12 months.  I was warned it may cause menopausal symptoms and aches and pain.  The aches and pains are horrendous and I have developed depression.  Do others have similar reactions?

  • Hi there, I found the first few months difficult and I had some very down times but they did go, aches and pains were terrible but they also settled and now they come and go, just persevere it does get better, I've been on it for 2 years in December  regards adean

  • Thanks, Lisa, I will have a good look at the booklet. Marg

  • Thanks Robyn, It's good to know that someone is out there and "listening"!  Switching to something else is an option my oncologist is considering. Good luck with the rest of your treatment.  Marg.

  • Dear Marg,

It’s Lisa from the Policy Team. I am sorry to hear about the side effects you are experiencing. You may already have spoken to your doctor about the joint pain, aches and also depression that you are experiencing, but if not, it would be good to talk to your doctor as some women find that switching from one hormone therapy to another can help to reduce side effects.

It can sometimes be helpful to get a second opinion if you feel that your doctor has not listened to you properly or you want to get another perspective.

We have also developed the booklet Hormone Therapy and Breast Cancer, which discusses the different types of hormone therapies, common side effects and practical strategies that some women have found to be helpful in managing side effects. You can download the booklet here.

    Best wishes,
    Lisa

  • Hello Marg:) I am sorry that you have no replies to your post yet.The online network is typically quiet on the weekend,so I am sure that this week you will hear from some ladies.I can't really help you,as I take Tamoxifen.I find it pretty good, although I had a few annoying things early on.I am about to go onto my 3 rd.year.I had heard that Femara causes joint aches and pains.Could you perhaps switch to something else? Please stay in touch on here, if only for support from people in a similar position.Cheers Robyn xox
