Feeling cheated

Two weeks ago I completed 6 months of neoadjuvant chemo to reduce a large stage 3 grade 3 tumor! making a lumpectomy possible I was told. I was even sent to have a marker implanted in my breast to make it easier for them to locate all of the tumor during surgery. However, after having to swap surgeons, I was told that I would not be able to have a lumpectomy and that a full mastectomy and auxiliary clearance was needed and that at the mdm my case was presented and it was a unanimous decision that I needed a mastectomy. I feel really cheated because I was lead to believe that a lumpectomy was going to be fine and why go through the discomfort of having a marker implanted if it was never possible. So on Thursday I had the surgery and now I have to research all the options for reconstruction to make sure there are no more surprises. I've been told that because I'm yet to have radiotherapy it will have to wait and my options may be limited. Just another curve ball in this BC game of roulette.

  • Sorry again Christine.  It posted before I finished typing.

The crochet prosthesis sound really good. I would love to find out more information about them. I will certainly have a look at Robyn's page.   I spoke to the rad onc yesterday and she said reco will have to wait until at least 12 months post radiotherapy. Unfortunately even the radiotherapy itself is being held up by ongoing problems with infections and seroma so I know I will be wearing a prosthesis for quite some time yet. I want to make sure I get a comfortable one.

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my original "rant"

    Cheers Polly

  • So sorry for the late reply Christine. I haven't been on the site very much lately as I have had some complications that lead to 2 further hospital stays.
