Expander pain

Hi I am nearly 4 months on from bilateral mastectomy with an immediate reconstruction. I've been very blessed with recovery and not needing chemo (as previously was told i did) or radiation. At the moment I am having what I presume to be muscle pain on my left side. Will I always be in pain even after the expanders are replaced with the implants? It's hard to sleep or even move without pain. Thought I would be over most of it by now. Any advice would be greatly accepted. :-) Thanks xxxxx Marney

  • I had really bad pain with my expanders. I was so glad to get them out. My advice is to make sure you check out your plastic surgeon and that you feel comfortable with your Dr. I had my first reconstruction done in May 2012. The surgeon. I had was so rude and I would get all worked up before my visits. I was rushed and was not able to ask a lot of questions. I was having it done in the public Hosp and there was no out of pocket expenses. The reconstruction was really bad and I have just had it re- done by another surgeon. I could not beleive the difference in the way I was treated. My new surgeon also did it that I had no out of pocket fees, and it was done in a private Hosp. I do have private health cover. My new surgeon was so caring and encouraged me to ask questions. I could not believe the after care I received from him . I saw him the day before op and he went over everything to make sure I was ok and also took photo's to take with him to op.I was wrapped up for 6 days and then he had ordered 2 compression bras for me. I had to put on once bandages were gone. I have to wear it for 6 weeks. I had none of this with my previouse surgeon. Only had tape on stitches. When I told her about the pain from the expanders, was told I was a whimp.I am very happy with my new re-construction.I do not have the pain I had with the expanders. Make sure you are happy with your surgeon before you go ahead. I went through so much that I should not have had to go through. Good luck. Debbie

  • Hi Marnz,

I felt uncomfortable after I had a top up and just prior to the exchange they were very tight. The expander is stretching the muscle I suppose. I would contact the plastic surgeon and ask for an answer. Dont hesitate thats what they are there for.

My advise to anyone going through reconstruction is to ask as many questions as possible then you are prepared for how they will look. Also discuss and research the type of implants you are having. Dont leave it for the surgeon to decide, get involved and ask to look at pictures. I was very upset when they didnt look good after the exchange. Its a slow process and can be a bit emotional at times.

Mine have been exchanged and I have had the nipples done, am ready for tattoing now. I have recently joined weight watchers and loss 5 kg so they are looking much better . Its funny when I flex my chest muscles because my boobs move up. Good party trick that I keep to myself.

Please let me know if I can be of any help. Hope you like your new boobs
