EVEN CHUNKIER

Hello ladies

Just wondering if any ladies that have had hercepton have experienced fairly dramatic weight gain after finishing hercepton?  I finished in March this year - had lost 22kgs approx from diagnosis to end treatment - and have regained a whopping 13kgs of that back since March.  It took me 25 yrs to gain the original weight, 15mths to lose it and now just 7mths for the 13kgs.   After chemo my appetite increased hugely, but I kept losing weight while on hercepton.  My appetite has now returned to normal, and its only in the last month that I realised how much weight I had gained and I'm now trying to lose it.  So far it has slowed but no weight loss.  Anyhow just thought it strange.  I am still not exercising enough - have finally worked out that when I get tired I lose control of my feet!!  Walking that I used to love, is now not as enjoyable - I'm not looking around, I'm watching were my feet are going!!  And after 3 falls from my treadmill (one doozy - nothing broken thank goodness) I just do short fairly slow walks as often as I remember.  But Im still a couch potato so often.  At night I now watch TV - pre cancer I'd read, sew or do crafts.  Housework is done with an amazing lack of oomph - what used to take an hour takes three, same with gardening.  Will this never end

  • Hi Maryrose  I'm not on tamoxifen so can't help you there.  But the emotional aspects of post treatment are unbelievable.  Just gotta believe it will get better.

  • Thanks Tracey  Sounds like what my Granny used to tell us to do .. My appetite returned to normal as soon as hercepton finished. (March 15)  I went from pigging out and not gaining weight to a more normal appetite and gaining.  Its wierd.  Just wondered if anyone who has been on hercepton had the same.

  • Hi Pam.  You are not alone. I finished my treatment in november last year and started tamoxifen in december. I too stacked on weight i was at my healthiest when diagnosed but have put all the weight i had lost back on. I used to be really motivated and had fantastic self control but post bc i am like a different person. Not sure whether its the tamoxifen. I am hoping that the warmer weather will bring along the kick up the bum i need to get healthy.

Hi Pam, I've found that the 5 2 diet has also reduced my appetite, so that might help you. The diet challenges your metabolism, so it might kick start it for you. Hoping that it helps, Trace ??????

  • Thanks Tracey, and thankyou for your inspirational and just plain beautiful posts!!!  I will look up the 5 2 diet.  Just seems so funny the weight loss/gain in such a short period of time.  Think these drugs have sledgehammered my system??? Long as they work!!  You wouldn't believe how much I could eat post chemo.  I went to a restaurant one night, still bald I remember probably shocked the patrons ...  I had a starter, full meal and a cake after to boot!!  I've never been able to fit that much food in ... and I wasn't getting that overfull feeling, not uncomfortable at all - just still hungry.  It was very strange.

Hi Pam, I gained some weight from chemo, and blamed it on the inactivity and the dexamethasone. After chemo finished, I started on the 5 2 diet, and the weight is slowly coming off. I've lost 3kg so far, with another 10kg to go, and find this eating plan easy to manage. It is just eating regular food at home, so is not expensive like some of the eating plans. Their website has some recipes that you can use also. I hope that this helps, Trace ??????

  • Thanks Rowdy  Yeah that tiredness is a bummer.  I am eating better than ever - so I don't get it.  The green smoothies/porridge at brekky, salad + protein for lunch, lots of veges + meat at tea.... why aren't we feeling better, oh and various vitamins.  I should be bouncing.

  • Hi Pam this is how I feel, I lack motivation to do anything. Always tired and struggling to eat better and to exercise. Not sure when it is going to end either.
