Emotional
This is my first post. I am 49 and was recently diagnosed with early stage invasive ductal breast cancer after it was picked up during breast screening. I couldn't believe this was happening to me and have been through all the range of emotions I've read about since that day. Today I'm sad!
I've been on a very steep learning curve, as no one in my family has had breast cancer so my knowledge of it was so poor. I have been told it's been caught early which is "lucky", so why don't I feel lucky? I feel gutted. I need to have a mastectomy even though the area of cancer is small because I have a connective tissue disease which rules out having radio therapy and tissue flap reconstruction. So after speaking with the breast surgeon about having skin sparing implant reconstruction, I now have an appointment arranged to see the plastic surgeon just after the holiday break. The waiting is hard, and I have started to think about having a double mastectomey to reduce my chances of it occuring in the other breast. I had a benign lump removed in my 20's and have lumpy texture breasts, so I've become a little bit obsessed with checking and feeling every little thing. The problem is I don't know if I can have bi-lateral mastectomy in the public system if one side is cancer free. This is something to dwell on over the next couple of weeks.
My husband and family have been amazingly supportive and wonderful but I have found other friends reactions hard to deal with. Some are very dismissive of my grief over losing my breast. Others have stopped talking to me. I am feeling quite lonely and slightly crazy and I've only just begun this rollercoaster ride...!
