Egg and lettuce!

Well, you ladies that have done chemo before me, were right again! It is not as bad as you imagine and taking one day at a time is the way to go. My side effects so far have been minimal, so I consider myself lucky at this point in time. The hardest thing has been keeping up with my strange food cravings! Tonight at 9.00pm I had a real urge for an egg and lettuce sandwich. By the time I boiled the egg, the rest of the house had gone to bed, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. lol. Now I'm sitting in bed, wide awake as usual, waiting to feel tired! Has anyone else had weird food cravings during chemo? Cheers :)

  • Nup, no cravings for anything but I'm eating quite a few mangos just because they are cheap at the moment and I like them.

I've gone off things that are salty and I'm not fussed on coffee a lot unless it is very weak and not hot.

I drink a bottle of Gatoraide every day and I think that is helping me with hydration.

  • Hi Robyn

I went crazy for tomatoes, so much so that we now grow our own (again) after a break of several years. I could not stand chocolate, coffee or other normal delights but the savouryness of tomatoes did the trick for me. (When I was preganant the first time it was fish cakes and the second time it was beetroot, so I am a little savoury lover! -  who eats too much chocolate haha).

I think that as long as you eat nutritious foods as much as you can, it is best while undergoing chemo. As the treatments accumulate in your body you may find it gets a bit harder, but I hope not. Things have come a long way since my own chemo times, July 2004 onwards for 8 months.

There is nothing as nice as home grown tomatoes and strawberries! Take special care, Mandy

  • Yes! I never really had food cravings when pregnant with my girls but had them big time during Chemo. They changed with each round of FEC though. The first round I had cravings for bacon and hot chips (not the healthiest foods!). The next round was roast lamb and chocolate cake. The third time it was shortbread biscuits (I made my husband buy two packets on the way home from Chemo but never ate any after that day!). On the balance side I also felt like eating lots of vegetables, eggs and red meat. I thought this was my body trying to build itself back up! My blood results were always excellent while on FEC. I never had the cravings with Docetaxel and ended up with low white blood count! Hope you keep feeling ok. You will probably feel tired when the DEX wears off about day 4. Take care. :) Deanne
